i picked up two Craftsman hatchets this weekend. on sale at Sears for $10.95.
i inspected them in the store for handle grain and bit shape,
but when i got home after further inspection i noticed the metal around the eyes is very thin on one side on both hatchets.
if i remember correctly there was a thread about this defect previously?

oh well
if can get some help with photo bucket i'll post images this weekend

From a review I had read on these, they appear better than the average hardware store hatchet. Apparently they are made by Vaughan. That is all assuming these are the camp hatchets with the stained handle and clear coated daton style head. Vaughan still makes its hatchets in the USA for their own line. I have their Sportsman's Axe which is a tiny hatchet with a ½ lbs head. I've found the steel to be very good and was surprised that it came with a nice high centerline on the cheeks. I've been thinking about picking up one of their super steel hatchets at some point just to review. If the quality if similar to the Sportsman's Axe they might be a good option for a currently produced hatchet. If the Craftsman is a USA made Vaughan then I could see it being worth the effort of profiling the bit and putting it to use. Worse case you have some cheap tools for splitting wood and chopping roots.
