I posited this on the Spyderco Forum as a response to a thread on the Diver and Pre-Diver Models and wondered if there was any interest in an H1 fixed-blade knife for divers. Sorry if it's wordy........

The Deacon said:
Don't have one, but wasn't the original Pre-Diver the one that sort of looks like an all stainless Snap-It EMT? Front lock, "Worker" shaped handle with a drying vent, sheepsfoot blade (I think with the same wire breaker as on the Probes), and metal Wischert snap at the pivot end. Believe most of them had the snap removed before they were sold as it did not work particularly well.

Pretty well sums it up, Paul. Except that was the original Diver Model you you described.

As related in the most holy "Book of Spyders":

In 1986, the Diver Model 2001, appeared. It was recognizably in the Clipit style, without pry bar, made of 440 stainless steel, electropolished for extra corrosion resistance, with a front-locked sheepfoot SpyderEdge blade of 3.25-inch edge length with a line-cutter built into the back. The scales featured teardrop drying holes and a lanyard hole and were etched with a measuring scale. The most unusual feature however, was the snap shackle located at the pivot end of one scale. This type of snap had originally been inventedby the Wichard Company in France, which gave Spyderco permission to use it. Due to a design flaw in Spyderco's version of the snap on the Diver Model, however, the shacklespring suffered from excessive lateral play and be displaced sideways allowing it to come free of what it was hooked to.
The remaining stock of Diver Models was modified by grinding off the clip, and its name was changed to the Pre-Diver, Model 2001-PRE indicating that more research and development was needed. A total of about 1,200 of both of these two 2001 models was made.

Thus endeth the lesson according to Delavigne. ....

The Diver, carried an MSRP of $94.95 when they were last sold by Spyderco.

My own experience diving leads me to consider ANY folder as a back-up to a sturdy dive tool and my Pre-Diver has never been under with me due to size and lack of a sheath or a decent lanyard. The previous owner however attached a bail through the lanyard hole and marred the area immediately around the hole.

The Probe and Mini-Probe however offer more than just a "knife" with their prising ability. They however are both heavy and the Probe is a bit lengthy. I am also not very keen on having to attach another tool like a Probe to my BCD or weight belt reducing hydrodynamic efficiency and possibly opening on its own accord by brushing an exposed knife against something that would entangle in the hole or having an inquisitive cephalapod probe the Probe. I would consider carring any of the new H1 folders with a wrist lanyard in a BCD pocket for back-up.

I currently carry a US Divers dive knife. It is a simple FB constructed of electropolished 420 stainless with a grippy rubber and plastic handle. It prys, it cuts and stores in a locking sheath on my right calf. It also suffers the inevitable corrosion around the the blade/handle and end cap hand interface. Some dive knives can be disassembled to fully clean and lube - usually silicon grease - to help stay the corrosion. Prior to this, I experimented witha Benchmade H2O River Rescue with many of the same features. I enjoyed the practicality of this knife as both a piece SAR equipment (swift-water and high angle rescue) and as a dive knife. It was still in excellent condition with no corrosion or surface blemishes when I gave it to Vox.

With current technology I would love to see Sal - himself an avid diver - consider discussion regarding a fixed blade H1 Deep Sea Spyder knife with formed locking rubber sheath. I know it would have a higher price point than most SS dive knives but there are also folks who buy their dive gear with the proper attitude of "It's your life down there - how much is your life worth". (I also own a $169.00 Boker Orca that tastes salt now and again) We have the Tasman, the Pacific, the Atlantic, and the basic Salt. It's time for a Spyder Down discussion.

NOTE: For those unaware, sea spider is the common name given to a family of marine animals, the pycnogonids, that have to be one of the most bizzare creatures God ever placed on our wonderful planet.

We actually have a couple of H1 Fixed Blade prototypes currently. Look for more information coming soon.

Thanks TK! ......

Just discovered a certain salg had registered and started posting in May on the SCUBAboard.com forums so I researched some of his posts. Tankajava may have some inputs to add although most of my comments were made over at your house. Meanwhile any info is welcome and I'll be waiting as fast as I can.

More than happy to test them in the kelp forests of California for you.......:D
