Hey all,

I was curious about the ban on fixed blades in Seattle. Does that include its "outer districts" such as bellevue, lynnwood, tacoma, etc? I thought it was just downtown. Any help on this is much appreciated.

Thanks,
Jason

Perhaps you're new to the area but the "outer districts" you listed are actually incorporated cities of their own accord, each with their own laws. There are laws at all 3 levels of civil government in WA i.e. state, county, and city. It's generally wise to research the area wherever you're planning to carry and don't be a dickhead if you're carrying somewhere and don't know the specific laws. It's also wise to purchase and carry a Concealed Carry Permit, which helps signify you're typically on the side of law-and-order to a questioning officer.

Welcome to the nanny-land of WA where you can have some fun as long as you pay for the right permit.

Here is a link to Washington state law (specifically WA penal code 9.41.270)- http://app.leg.wa.gov/rcw/default.aspx?cite=9.41&full=true#9.41.270

Washington has a peculiar law (9.41.270) that basically makes it a crime if you carry a knife in public and the mere sight of it causes people alarm. So openly carrying a fixed-blade anywhere in public in the state of Washington might cause you some problems.

As for the concealed carry of fixed-blades goes, WA penal code 9.41.250 specifies that the concealed carry of "any dirk, dagger,...or other dangerous weapon" is illegal (if you click on the link above, scroll up a little to find this law). Even if your particular knife isn't considered a "dagger" or "dirk" under Washington state law, it wouldn't surprise me if the authorities in Washington consider any fixed-blade to be a "dangerous weapon".

I don't know how strictly the knife laws are enforced in Washington, or how likely people are to call the cops on you if they see you carrying a fixed-blade in public, but it looks to me like carrying a fixed-blade in public in the state of Washington is a risky thing to do.

But I assume you don't live here Killgar. Carrying reasonable size fixed blades as a everyday tool will not get you in trouble outside the big city areas. And why would you need to carry a hunting/survival knife in downtown Seattle? Don't say self-defense because that means you view your knife as a dangerous weapon. The exception to this is rule is you do something to bring yourself to the attention of the law for other reasons. Then expect them to use anything they can against you.
