Any one know the history of the HI Seax, I ordered one from Aunti but was wondering how a Saxon knife ended up in HI?

Most likely it came with Alexander the Great just like the Falcatta which later maybe changed into what we know as Kukris today.
Now how Alexander 's people got Seaxes is still a mystery. Probably he had contact with the Saxons long before the Romans? Or the Saxons copied it from Alexander? I guess we'll never know.

The Falcata and the Kopis are speculated to be the parents of the Kukri, but so far a provable parent for the kukri has not been found. As for the Seax, if I had to say, I'd say someone at some point asked HI to make a Seax and it became one of those special items they make from time to time.

That's why I said "maybe" regarding the Kukris origins.

Also I got my history books out and came to the following conclusion:
Vikings where known to have Seaxes and during one of their raids they must have reached the Himalayan Sea and left quite an impression in Nepal.
There is no Himalayan Sea? Then where does the Himalayan Sea salt come from?

I think he's asking about how the HI Seax came to be. Basically, it came from you guys...or guys like you:D

Someone asked Uncle Bill, why don't you have the kamis make a seax?
So UB basically said, "OK fellas, design something and we'll see what happens."
Several drawings and prototypes later and we ended up with the HI Seax:)

Well thanks again, it nice to know the HI heritage, can't wait for it to get here. I am a fan of Bernard Cornwell and his Last Kingdom novels where they are mentioned often.

I've never been a fan of the HI Seax mainly because it made me feel like someone got into a sword fight and sliced off the HI sword which turned into a HI Seax.

Have you ever had one on your hands? I'm not trying to be a snot bag. I'd just bet if you did you may not have the same view point. The Kami's know the proper feel for many blades, not just Khukris. They duplicate the feel very well IMHO.

Oh I know you're not being a snot bag. :p
But I'm a lady, I like pretty knives. I also like Fantasy stories and so I can too easily see the knife as a broken sword with a vivid imagined story behind it. Can't bring myself around to liking the design at all. It's as simple as that.

Honestly, I have to agree with the Lady here. As much as I love and trust any HI piece with my life, and can absolutely see the utility in the Seax, it is most definitely not for me. I've seen plenty that made me go, "wow, that's pretty darn cool," but I can't imagine feeling like I want one for any reason but to "complete" the collection. I thought it was funny when you mentioned it looking like a broken sword, cuz that was pretty much my first impression too. Or like someone tried to make a tanto style blade, but didn't know what side gets sharpened :p

Nobody has to like a SEAX. But broken sword? Would a sword have that much belly?
The SEAX having the tip towards the edge makes it a finer tip than on a Tanto. Some might need that for detailed work others want to penetrative car doors. Both would probably fine for softer things.
Having the tip more forward also allows for easier stabbing when looking at human ergonomics and wrist joints.

I'm crying here just thinking about getting stabbed with a Seax....definitely leave a mark.

I don't have one, they really haven't blown my dress up but like many of the others that I was luke warm receptive too, they are growing on me. I definitely see some advantages to them and one of these days I'll have one too.

Sometimes just because is reason enough you know?

When the Indian subcontinent slammed into Asia it lifted the sea bed high towards the heavens.

I'm aware of that.
This way every salt deposit on earth could be called sea salt but it's not.

Sea salt is what's extracted from the sea by humans.
Rock salt is what we mine for. It's still rock salt even if a long time ago it came from a lake or sea.

In my opinion calling Himalajan rock salt a sea salt is deceptive marketing aimed at certain consumers.

I was poking fun at that.
Well, trying at least.

I have not clue or good explanation but my wife bought some Himalayan Sea Salt and I like it.

It comes in one of them grinder dealy hymers like pepper in the high class restaurants where you have to where a noose and shiny shoes.
I like the stuff. I don't know why it would be any different or better than regular old salt but I prefer it. Unexplained mystery to me.

For some reason it reminds me of eating one time in the fancy restaurant on the one cruise I went on to Alaska.

Very fancy, spent the whole time admiring the wood work, and construction. Waiter grabbed my napkin apparently planning to put it on my lap, without thought I grabbed his arm and asked him what his game was.
I must of looked like the okie from Muskogee. We got along fine after that, actually had a great time.
All kind of over my head in the etiquette department.

I really like the HI Seax. It is on of my favorites for sure. The bigger, the better.

Can't disagree about their looks. Kinda homely. I wish my wife liked pretty knives, she tends to prefer things that sparkle, much like my personality.:grumpy:
