Well, the seax, the baby dui churra and the JKM I snagged last week have arrived and I have to say, I'm very pleased with all three (though I haven't had a chance to field test them yet). All three are beautiful knives.

My only complaint (and a minor one at that) are the scabbards on the seax and the dui churra. The dui churra is a tad tight, though it will probably relax a little bit once it's been used a few times. The seax scabbard is a little loose and I'm not crazy about the loop placement...I'd have preferred a frog instead. As far as the looseness goes, I could probably tweak things by moving the snap or adding a strap. Or I might just try making a new scabbard from scratch...I've got the palm and the awl so I just need to find some leather.

The 8" JKM was the best snag though...it's nearly perfect. So much so that I might forgo trying to snag a sarge...(ahh who am I trying to kid?)

Hiya blackbeard,

if you decide to 'do-it-yourself' - here's some examples that should be fairly easy:

seax's are designed to be worn horizontally accross the back, hilt to the right side (exception being when over about 12" they were hung like a sword) pic of 12" seax sheath follows:

this is a reasonably basic one, can get 'em with tooled leather, engraved brass/bronze strip, brass/bronze ring suspension instead of the leather loops, etc. note seax is inserted with edge UP, towards the brass strip...

smaller seax used a pouch like sheath with leather thong suspension, which is infinitely adjustable to suite your carry style: (again, edge is carried facing UP, towards the seam)

the HI seax sheath is based on the sarki's interpretation of the original design, so the belt loops are on the wrong side, forcing an edge down carry. they can be teased loose & re-sewn on the correct side, i think some owners have done so.

Hey, someone had to crack a joke sooner or later.

Interesting stuff. My main gripe with the seax was the sheath as well. I'd been meaning to make a new one but it keeps getting put off. These pics gave me a few ideas, especially the brass strip. I like it.

Ed - the scabbards are alive and change dimensions over time. If it doesn't wear in and loosen up a bit there are ways to change the fit. Don't sweat it.

I like all of HI's "little" knives but the Sarge is hands down my favorite. Like the BGRS, I never could figure out what all the fuss was about until I had one in my hand...then, suddenly, it all made sense. Excellent little camping knife.

Thanks you guys.
Kronckew, you've given me a few ideas to work with and Dean, I'd actually glanced at your list before...there's a heck of a lot of good info there to go through. I hope it doesn't get lost when the board gets pruned.

Is that one sharpened on the CURVED side???

yep, seaxs (or seaxes, or seaxeseses...) come in a variety of shapes & sizes, the broken back seax is an english variation (saxon that is - thats why they are called saxons or originally seaxons) the continental tribes preferred rounded back or straight back, rounded belly ones.

p.s. - the other affiliated tribes in the UK, the angles (from their word for spear), also used the broken back thus we speak of anglo-saxon, and get the name of the country from the angles, and we all are speaking anglish, the 'a' sound having changed over the years.....both were german tribes anyway....
