seax handle but plate attachment

I recently got a Seax by Sher from a daily special. the blade is really nice, and I like the handle. The handle swell fits your hand nicely, and would stop forward movement when you stab a pumpkin on halloween.

I wonder about the attachment of the but plate. The handle is a full tang/slab with rivets, but I can't see how the but plate attaches. It looks like there is a 1/8" line of laha between the plate and the horn handle scales around the bottom of handle.

I still can not see how the plate is attached to the handle....

Anyone know how this is done?

I've been wondering about this myself. Anyone ever pulled the scales off a seax and looked? I don't want to take a guess and make a fool out of myself but I will if I have to. (Take a guess, that is. Well, the fool part is probably correct also.)

One my Sher seax it almost looks like the buttcap is part of the tang. Like he folded over steel forging the tang to make it. This doesn't seem possible to me, but who knows?
My Kumar Seax has a buttplate that appears to be soldered on with brass like the bolster of my kerambit. Also just a guess.

Hehehehe, I don't know why I don't think about things like this, just never paid any attention to how it may be affixed nor given any thought to it and I'm the one that has all kinds of time to worry about such things.:foot:  ;) :D

But since mine just happened to be laying quite close I picked it up and looked. Never realized just how uneven the butt cap is on mine 'till just now.:grumpy:
And now I'm not sure if the butt cap is a solid piece of steel or a thinner piece with a skirt soldered onto it, but no thicker than it is,
< than 1/8" I'm going to say it's solid and may have been a piece of scrap which would account for it's not being flat and even.
This Seax is a blem so I'm not knocking the knife, just wanted to clear that up.;) :p

Anyway there was some staining on the flat of the butt cap so I used a piece of Scotch-Brite and cleaned it up.
Now I'm fairly sure that it is riveted on but not positive.
An etch might bring out the rivets but other than that taking it apart would be the surest way to tell methinks.;)
On one side there are several small pits in a semblance of a circle and on the other end/side a very faint disoloration that doesn't quite match the surrounding material.
So until someone comes up with more and better info I'm going to say they're riveted on each side and then sanded/polished smooth.
That's my story and I'm sticking to it.:D :p

Thanks for your replies. The cap on mine is pretty shiny, and I don't want to change that.
I can't see any rivets, but will look more closely.
I sure don't want to take it apart to find out how it goes together.

I wanna get me one of thos knives, but I can't say it right. I go back and fourth in my head on that.

This thread is fun. I got a kick of how you guys woke up the old ndn, chuckling, wondering how is this thing attached?

Mine looks like it's part of the tang too.
It's not perfect though so I suspect that it was soldered/welded on and then ground flush at the edges.

the buttplate is a separate piece that is welded on. This was not something we requested...but rather one of those "kami solutions" that we've grown to love. :D
