EMS #1.

Got the Done Deal.

I don't mind a small cut on the leather sheath. I usually just fill those with epoxy or superglue.

I also don't mind a too-loose sheath, since that's not hard to fix.

More of a problem is a too tight sheath. I recently got two excellent Sirupatis by Purna. They were in two different DOTDs, but the blades are a matched pair. Identical blades, one handle half an inch shorter than the other. The sheaths are tight I had a bit of trouble pullling them out. Now I can't get them all the way back in. I think the points are catching on the inside. If anyone has a suggestion how to deal with this, I'm open to ideas. In the past I've found that removing the chakma and karda loosens a tight sheath just enough, but not in this case.

I've untucked the leather at the opening and shaved away a little of the wood to loosen before. If the points are catching, this approach might not work. It is somewhat easier to tighten a loose sheath rather than loosen.
I rarely use the sheath that comes with them anyhow. I use them around the place and don't get out in the woods. PUGS did a sheath for my KLVUK that I use to carry with me when needed.

I just need a sheath to hold the blade, not to carry around. I have too many blades (and too sharp) to store unsheathed, and I'm in a relatively dry climate (years of drought, actually), so they don't rust ln the sheath. I have made a few sheaths for blades that came without them, but I hate to have to do it when I have a sheath that's just too tight. Maybe if I jiggle the blade just right I can get it to slide in. I suppose I could try putting some mineral oil on the forward part of the blade to make it more slippery.

David, you already mentioned what I was going to suggest. I usually cover the blade in a generous amount of mineral oil. Then, slide it in and back out one time. Take a look at the blade and you might be able to see where the oil got wiped off. That might point you to where the tight spot is. Sometimes an oily blade going in and out a bunch of times can fix the whole issue.

I love the picture that came with these Seax knives. Maybe we will hold them together again one day. You never know.

Man! I have alway wanted an 18" seax. I have a 14" that really cuts well i can only imagaine how much more the 18's will cut. Congratulations on 2 great deals!

for tight sheath id wrap the blade in several layers of masking tape. Then dampen the leather. Might could even heat it a bit with hair dryer while wet then slide the knife back in and let it dry. That will stretch the leather and when it dries again the knife should slide in easier without the masking tape. Just make sure you tape the blade well so it dont rust whilst everything dries.

Wondered if that would work with the wood shell inside the water buffalo hide though.

I think it might work because the wood shell is two slabs of wood held together by the leather skin. I don't think the wood is one solid shell.

My concern is that I might not be able to get the blade inside even if the leather is wet, and if I do the blade might get stuck inside when the sheath dries. I might try it, but for now I have plenty of other things to work on. Another possibility is to find a piece of thick plastic of approximately the right size, and shove that inside while wetting the sheath. Then I can grab the plastic with a pair of pliers to pull it out. If and when I'll try this, I'll post the results.

These look phenomenal! I have 3 seax knives from HI. Two 14" original(ish) runs by Kumar and his brother Sher.

I also have a monstrous 18" version that Kumar made a couple years ago. I would say it is probably in my top 3 favorite HI blades.

Lucky sharks :)

Well if your worried about gettin the knife in or out then rub the blade and masking tape included with mineral oil or some of your favorite slippery stuff and I bet you'll get it in. If you get it in then I can bet you'll get it out once its dry! Things just happen to work that way naturally :)
Yes the wood is split and when you wet the sheath it will be stretching from the sides in. Since the seam is in the middle of a wood side then thats a great advantage. There is a rare occasion that the wood is not carved out wide enough and the tip digs in when you sheath the knife but that will eventually wear in. To start out nuke a wet towel and wrap the sheath for a while and that should loosen things up a bit.

Greetings, I’ve spotted others giving glowing compliments about their HI seax. I might be being totally clueless, but who is the maker HI so I might find one of these wonderful seaxs?
Thanks,
Phil

First off, you're not allowed to be totally clueless, that's my job.

If you're asking who "HI" is, it's Himalayan Imports, and you've posted your question on their forum.

An email to Yangdu Martino (himimp@aol.com) should get you a response as to whether there are any available.

Good luck,
Joe

If Ms Yangdu doesn't have any available, I think I know a guy that has one he would sell.
