Seax on television

Have any of you guys been watching The Last Kingdom on BBC America ? It's about the last Saxon kingdom in England during the Viking invasions (more or less). The main character is Uthred, a Saxon ealderman that was captured and raised by Danes. In the first couple episodes at least, his main weapon is a Seax. It's made from a broken sword so it's double sided rather than single sided like an HI Seax, but still cool to see one on TV. The shows pretty good, sort of like a PG-13 version of Game of Thrones. It's based off the book series "The Saxon Chronicles"

Agree with Dobe_1 going to have to look for it. Sounds like just the thing to cure my "Vikings" withdrawals.

Speaking of saexes, I used mine to slice up a pork shoulder this weekend. Usually I use my Hmong knife, although the meat is soft enough that it'd probably be better to tear the meat off with forks. I just look at it as an excuse to use a big knife.

Anyways, it did a great job. The long straight edge worked out much better than the curved Hmong one, and I found I was able to get into all the nooks and crannies with the tip. Only downside was a little arm fatigue on account of the weight of the Seax. My big old hickory butchers knife probably would have worked better. But the butcher's knife is just good in the kitchen whereas the Seax is good in the kitchen and can also be used to chop wood and/or fend off maurading Danes/Franks/Frisians/etc.

hmm pork shoulder. Since cannibals consider human to taste like pork. And a Seax being a long knife that was frequently used for fighting humans as well as kitchen/camp craft. is there some sort of crossover I should be concerned for you about there? Or am I reading too much into a perfectly reasonable love of big sharp knives?

You caught me! Whenever I need to Barbeque me and my Seax raid one of the neighboring tribes.

me like seax, me have many

Love the first for it's definite traditional style but 2 is so COOL! It doesn't really look traditional but I LIKE!! What is the back half of the grip made of? Looks like ivory carved into a weave pattern. And are the front and rear bolsters basically really big brass washers?

Interesting how they have similar loops on the sheath for attaching. Not sure how they work or what the plan it but apparently it's been happening awhile.

Wish I could figure a way to get past them damn moat monsters, I'd love to spend a few evenings, days or weeks, whatever it take checking out kronkew's sharp pointy stuff. Got some mighty fine stuff he do.

Maybe air assault, like para sail. I ain't much for jumping out of planes what ain't broke though.

LoL, between the Moat Monsters the Dire Wolves and his tentaclie Lady-Love, I don't think you would get enough time to get a good look at all his sharp-point and heavy-blunt objects. But based on all the things he has shown here it just might be worth the risk to give it a try. Hubby jumped outta Planes and Helo's in the Army but I agree. I have a rule that I don't jump out of a plane that is coming down to earth slower than I would without it.

i have patriot missles installed in the corner turrets, as well as automated 20mm. gatlings firing depleted uranium armour piercing projectiles. the lasers are almost ready for deployment as are the rail guns. should be ready for testing later this morning. i welcome anyone volunteering to be the targets. i promise to send flowers to the funerals.

anyway, the carved seax has a carved 'antler' section at the pommel, and an exotic wood section forward of that, with thick cut and polished brass ovals at either end. the pommel end has a rectangular keeper under the peened tang end. the blade is hand forged high carbon steel. the scabbards on both are made to hang off your belt almost horizontally in the small of your back, edge up.

they both were customs. the 1st one with the black HC blade was from my tame bladesmith in the Czech Republic, the purdy dress one was made by a bladesmith in spain, and finished by a french craftsman who carved the grip & made the scabbard. it was not cheap. i et ramen for a month after that one ;) the photo is actually their catalogue one, it shows an unsharpened round point version for re-enactors. mine is a properly sharpened razor. the black one is also razor sharp and differentially heat treated.

here's a picture i took a few minutes ago with my phone.

note the grip swells slightly downwards in the bottom line of the carved antler section, the top line remains straight and the side thickness is also constant. the antler section on mine is a bit longer than was shown in the catalogue photo. one of the variations you get in a custom. took about 6 weeks

Kronckew, how's that Romanian-made sword you were getting a little while ago? I'd be curious about some details, if possible.

I really like that first seax you posted. Look alot like the one from The Last Kingdom actually.

Also, I resisted posting this ever since I started this thread but I can't any longer! Sorry
