Very cool. They are growing on me more and more. I still want one with a longer blade though.

Beautiful work Keith, very nicely done. Sweet, who's Hubbard? Bob, you wanting a Lang Seax so you can go pillage a village?

Sarge, I just gotta have one to go with my longboat. Really I just want another 2 inches on there, it would just please my sense of aesthetic balance, they look kind of stumpy to me otherwise.

Stumpy? Ever seen a fashion model "in the flesh" as it were? The camera does indeed add "five pounds".

p.s.: promise I'll give you my unbiased and objective opinion once I get my hands on the real thing, oh, and you'll probably want to know about the knife too.;)

and Pens and Mpisi's will go out Monday. Didn't get pix of Sarges and Ruels. Ruel's turned out veery spiffy, what with 30 runes on the thing! Hopefully he can share some pix with us when it gets 2 him.

Sarge and Ruel: Email w/deliv confirmation # being sent.

Thanks for your patience and support.

Sarge and Ruel's are in the mail...

Sarge's are in his grubby mitts, and Sarge has tears of joy trickling down his cheeks. These are more than just nice. They are to me what a khukuri is to a Nepali, the all purpose tool/weapon of my ancestors.:D

Keith,

Jake's site is awesome. His work looks wonderful, the 'Runatal' link was... inspiring?? I liked it a lot (lame!).

Glad to hear yours landed safe and sound, Greg.

What kind of test do you think we should imagine up for these? I was thinking of some things similar to the stuff they did for the ABS cutting competition at Blade.

Anybody got any ideas?

Hopefully I'll have mine soon...I'm certainly ready to have at it. Maybe by the time Yvsa is done with the Pen Knife Passaround I'll be able to put the two neck-and-neck in some rough testing. :D

Don't nobody worry - there's a wide gulf between what I do and what Cliff Stamp does.

Dan, I'll be taking my horn handled one on a weekend campout/medieval event this weekend and putting it through the wringer (the wood handled one with Keith's nice etching will be kept pristine, natch). Is it just me, or has anybody else noticed that Sher tempered the edges on these really, really, hard. I tried a file on it and it just skipped off. Thought maybe the file was dull, so tried a brand new file and it did the same thing. Got the horn handled booger scary sharp now, so it's ready for some "13th Century" testing.:D

Still working on Pen's. Had some issues with the mask I was using not wanting to come up, so I had to remask it and draw/cut all the lines again for the Ogham. At least the resist I use these days is totally transparent, made it much easier to line up.
Poor Pen! Sittin in the East waiting. Sorry, man. Been terribly busy these days. I'll get that sucker out ASAP, just wanna make sure it turns out OK.

Sarge, I also noted that the edges are really hard, and uo tp almost the last inch or two of the blade. Fine by me, it ain't gonna see the kind of impact that the khuks do. Also, While I had them all here, I notet that they all had the same angle and direction of slight bowing near the tempered area. The temper gave each seax a slight bend, all same direction, all same degree of bow. He's consistent.

I think the bowing is from the localized temper. THat steel contracts and pulls the softer steel a bit. The final heat treat relieves the stresses tho.

You and me are in the same boat, Keith. Quality over speed. I'm willing to wait it out. Do some yoga beforehand if you need to...:D

:p

Well worth the wait, Keith does outstanding work. I'm very pleased with myself for ordering two of these. The unadorned horn handled one will be my "test mule" (I'll post results of the testing), and the one that Keith has worked his magic on will be a long term project. That wood handle is going to receive some decorative carving, and I'll be going for 100% authenticity on it's scabbard.
