Seb 25 question:

I just got a Seb 25 in a trade that is born Nov 2012, so it is one of the early releases. I was suprised when I first opened it that it isn't nearly as smooth as my umnumzaan. I have to exert a large amunt of pressure to try and open the blade. When it does start to open it still has some serious resistance to it. Also, when I take the pressure from the lockbar off the knife it does not swing close freely or even with significant shaking. I have taken it apart many times and lubed it up with reeve grease and tried lithium grease as well... it still won't do away with the lack of smoothness. The washer are definetly in the correct position.

My questions are: Can I send it back to CRK for them to make adjustments to it? Is it ridiculous to send a knife back to them saying I would like it smoother? Can they do anything to fix the problem? Does anyone have any experience with a similar situation where they sen their knife back for smoothness and the problem was remidied?

Thanks,
Any and all advice is welcome.

Like the poster above me said, loosen the pivot until you have the desired results with no play. Be careful though, you can remove half of the pivot and still not have any play as long as the frame screws are tight. You want it to be as right as possible while still being as smooth as you want it. A tiny bit of loctite adds some insurance to a pivot coming loose on its own.

Ditto. Also, mine has smoothed out a good bit more over the last few months. That big ceramic ball works a nice polished path on the blade which has made opening and closing super smooth. I prefer a little resistance though. I don't care for free swinging blades with a frame or liner lock anyway. Either way I'd give it some time to break in before I worried too much about it. The previous owner might not have used it that much.

I know if my washers are full with grease after a fresh cleaning my blade wont swing freely for a while after.
So maybe give it some time and play with your pivot tension.

If you find nothing works you can always send it in and ask them to check if the spring in the lock bar is too tight.

I have one of the first 30 from Nov too, when I got it the pivot was so tight that I had to use two hands to open the knife. I tried to use it a lot hoping that it'd break in but after a few weeks of edc use and no change I took it apart, cleaned, lubed it with CRK grease and put it back together. The knife seemed mildly smoother but seemed to tighten back up after a day so I loosened the pivot and then loosened it again a day later-then, SHAZAAM!!!!!!!! Perfection.

I almost sold the knife because of how hard it was to open, it was nothing like any of my 3 umnumzaans, or any of my Sebs for that matter. The larger detent ball coupled with a lock bar that has significantly more tension than any of the other knives just made it a bear to use, but, thankfully with a little more tweaking, and then a little more tweaking, and a little breaking in, it became all that I was hoping that it would-perfect.

I read that the first 30 were more custom than production with a lot more hand fitting and I've seen variations in the couple that I've had my hands on that make me believe that it's true. Give that beauty some time and TLC and if for some reason you can't get it where you want it give CRK a call, I'm sure that they'll ask you to send it in and will tune it up for you.
The rear stand off screw broke on mine and CRK has said that there was an issue with the specs of the screws on those first 30 from Nov, if you haven't got the replacement screws in for yours yet you may just want to send it to them anyway- not that you can't do it yourself but you can ask them to smooth it out for you while it's there. I'm just speculating but I'm guessing that they'd be happy to tweak its action for you since they need to replace the screws anyway, chances are that it'd be a freebie for your trouble- they're good like that :D

Yeah mine is from early February and the blade doesn't swing freely either. When I first got it it was terrible to open but that has gotten significantly better, although I'm not sure if that's because the lock bar isn't so stiff, or because the detent hole has chamfered from use.

In any case I'm happy with this particular knife. I'm very happy to have an early model that has the pressed in stop pin.

I think you probably need to sell me your 25 and buy one of the new models in the flat box!! ;)
