Seb opening in pocket...

I had been carrying my Seb in my flight suit for the past four months while I was deployed, just got home a few weeks ago. I started carrying it in my pants pocket again, and twice in one week I found it open in my pocket and cut myself on it. I keep my wallet in that pocket as well, so somehow it's catching and opening the blade.
I never had this problem before I deployed, so I figured it had loosened up somehow, took it apart and cleaned the whole thing, put it back together. I was hoping that would tighten the blade, but it opens just as easily as before. To much oil perhaps? What can I do to tighten the blade? Right now I'm afraid to carry the thing, two cuts on my fingers is enough. Any thoughts?

yep, happened to me too. I now carry front right pocket, insteaf of back pocket, blade spline against seam. Problem solved. Or you could always use a belt sheath.

I have never had that happen in the 8 or so years that I have been carrying a Sebenza.
Make sure that ceramic ball is clean of debris. I also have been using a multi positional sheath from TAD gear for years now. A very well made piece of equipment. It can be mounted anywhere.

I had it for a year with no problems, then two in a week. *shrug* Not sure why, but I'd much rather 'fix' it then move things around.

I'd send it in to CR & let them adjust it for you.

Do you carry it loose in the pocket? Any knife can open when carried that way unless it locks closed. Making the blade tighter will prevent that for happening in most cases, but you'd have a hard time opening the knife. To tighten the pivot on a Sebbie you have to go quite hard on the pivot pin, it's kinda risky and will ruin the threading in the long run IMO.
On the other hand, if you carry it clipped in the front pocket with the blade pine near the pocket seam you are always safe even with a tip up clip.

I have been EDCing my small Sebenza in my front left jeans pocket as a money clip for about 6 weeks with no problems. I have it loose with $20 to $30 bucks of various bills in the clip and even some loose change. My blade does not seem real tight. It might be the wallet is snagging it???? Hope you sort it out! I'm lost without mine!!!

I noticed that due to the tight tolerances of CRK folders, they can squeeze in the most blade for the size of the scales. Therefore, the blade ends very close to the open ending point of the handle. It's possible that the edge of your wallet (or just one side) is getting shoved into the open back design and catching the tip of the edge. If I stick my smallest digit into that space, I can almost reach the blade so it isn't impossible for something as thin and as grabby as leather to catch the sharp tip.

You could try the leather pouch that CRK sells, I had one for a Mnandi and loved it. It gives that same loose in your pocket feeling without trapping lint and actually protects your pocket lining from ripping as well.

Hope that helps.

Just wondering if the wallet is catching on the thumb stud at all ???

This may be enough to get the blade partially open.

I don't own a Sebbie, have gotten close a few times, just never made the leap. I haven't been around that long and will say that this is the first time I've heard of such a problem. I have no doubt about the fit and finish, tolerances way beyond the industry norm, simple, elegant and "built like a tank" design of the Sebenza, but guys I would trade all of that in a minute not to have my knife open in my pocket and cut me when I reach for it, I mean that should be the absolute highest priority for folding knife design. I'm also a little surprised that most of the responses suggest getting a sheath for it, or changing the way you carry it. Sorry but that just isn't acceptable in my opinion for a knife in this class. I'm very curious to hear how this resolves.

I'm guessing that you're all right, the wallet is somehow catching on the thumb stud and pulling the blade open. The question is, why is it suddenly doing it now after never having done it before? The first time I wasn't to worried about it, but after two I got a bit concerned. :) I agree that carrying it against the seam would stop the problem, but I carry it in my left pocket (right handed, just like to keep it there so it doesn't get in the way of my keys), so there's no way to keep the blade from facing out. Might have to swap pockets, but I'd rather figure out the 'why is this happening' question. *shrug* I'll give it a try over the next few weeks and see if cleaning it out has tightened it at all. We can hope. :)

Never carry anything else in the same pocket as a knife.

and if you do, use the leather pouch that is what it was intended for in the first place. Otherwise, invest in a good quality sheath. Check out Vess, Lifter Mike Tea or G2; they all make great sheaths.

I'd be curious to know if the opening of the knife seems any different as of lately? Does it feel that the detent is doing its job? I prefer a very stiff detent on any folder with a frame/liner lock. Keeping that knife closed in the pocket is top priority. Maybe just a quick trip back to the factory for a new detent ball will help solve the problem. Switching the way you carry your pocket folder is sometimes NOT an option and also a pain. I wouldn't try to tighten the pivot screw, it will only go so far and the Sebenza is set to close tolerances for a reason.

I have a small sebi and pocket carry it every day. Mine actually clicks at the last second when I close it. This holds it shut. Does yours do this? I think the indent for the ceramic ball must be blocked or damaged or the ball itself got damaged from something.

I had the problem with mine ,a large Sebenza which sits on the bottom of the pocket, spine up. My key ring would catch on the stud and open the blade . I filed the stud shorter ,very easy to do , and no more problem ! Somewhere in the forum is a photo I posted of this .The stud on my classic is now 3/32" high .

You might want to take it apart again and check out the hole in the blade
where the ball bearing falls into the detent, maybe there is some gunk in
there keeping the blade from being held firmer by the ball bearing.
Or, the ball bearing has pressed it's way deeper than it should and it's
no longer able to retain the blade? if that's the case, you'd need to send
it in for a looksee and possible exchange of the lockbar side of the scales.

Thanks for all the help, I'll try and take it apart again and check it all out.
