Sebbie: clip or no clip?

So after thinking about it for a couple of years, and a few aborted attempts, I finally picked up a couple of Chris Reeve knives: a Mountaineer II and a small micarta sebbie.

The thing about the Sebbie is, it's meant to be my EDC. It replaces a CRKT Wrangler that I carried for a couple of years. The Wrangler is a good knife for office use and even a little light cardboard cutting, but I was always afraid that it would be easy to damage or even break so I tended to baby it. Hence, the sebbie.

At 1.4 oz. and 3.5" closed, that wrangler sure fit in my pocket good. I never knew it was there unless I needed it. But at 3 oz and a little over 4" closed, I find that the sebbie is a bit bothersome riding in my pocket.

So I've spent the last couple of days experimenting with carrying the sebbie without the clip in my pocket, and with the clip but clipped to the inside of my pocket. Of the two, its the most comfortable to carry clipped to the inside of my pocket, but I'm afraid that it would be easy to catch the knife on something and have it fall out.

So I was wondering what other people do. Do you use the clip? And, if so, have you ever had it catch on something and so lose the knife? Is the clip reasonably reliable?

This sure is a solid knife. I'd really hate to lose it.

Thanks.

I carry with the clip on, right front pocket against the seam. No problems.

I used to carry back pocket but after various paint scrapes and car seat rips and getting snagged when I take a coat off I switched.

I carry mine, right front pocket, clipped against the seam as well. I have never had a problem. You COULD always get one of CRK's leather slip sheaths for your Sebbie. Just a thought.

I carry mine without the clip and have replaced it with a clip insert , instead i carry it in the CR leather slip deep in my pocket , there is no way im going to run the risk of it falling out . I kept the clip on for a week or two and now find it far more comfortable in the hand without it :)

Thanks for the replies. Just out of curiousity, doesn't the leather slip get in the way when you want to use the knife? Anyway, putting leather around the sebbie and then putting it in my pocket seems like something that would make matters worse from a comfort level (I've never been one to like a bunch of stuff -- coins, keys, etc. in my pockets).

I've thought about a belt sheath for it. For various reasons that doesn't seem like such a good idea for office wear. But maybe on the weekends? Except that if I'm going to carry a knife in a sheath, it might as well be a large folder .... I don't really need another sebbie do I? Ummm... hmmm... A large sebbie? Maybe with graphics this time?

No, no, I'm NOT going to start collecting sebbies ....

Honest.

I can quit anytime, you know... ;)

The reason i use a leather slip is because my large Sebbie is a Snakewood with gold inlay and i dont want it scratched .

My large and small regular Sebs have had clips removed and I like them like that , no insert either. They feel better in the hand this way for me . I rub them down with 1200 grit paper to clean them up when they get a bit banged up . Result is a satin finish which again I like.

I removed the clip on mine, as I carry it in my back pocket. My front pocket carries my P3AT, so no room for a knife.

It depends on the particular office but when I was a worker bee in an office I carried this CRK on a black belt and nobody said a thing. Of course this CRK is not a Sebenza but an Umfaan:)
With my Sebenza, I prefer to remove the clip use a similar belt sheath.

I just got my sebbie a week ago. I was worried about looseing the knife, but I started checking the resistance while the knife was clipped to my pants pocket. I am fairly confident that my clip will keep my sebbie safe and secure.

If anything the clips are too tight. My jeans are getting eaten where the clip rides.....Guess I need to buy better jeans.

Thomason,
I actually grew up in NW OKC, but I've been here for a while. You should check out Edmond now! 3 highschools now, and a couple hundred thousand people. Heavily populated from western (west side) to east of I35 (east) and Memorial (south) to just north of Waterloo (north).

I've been walking around with my sebbie clipped to my pocket for a few days now. No knife clip disease yet, but it's so comfortable riding there that I forget it IS there.

Really, really nice knife. Worth every penny.

I bought my Small classic Sebenza about two months ago and have been carrying it down in my pocket with nothing else in there so as to not scratch it up. I left the clip on it. This is my first Sebenza and I just want to say that I LOVE it. I am a less is more, as far as looks go (unless we're talking about women), kind of person so the plain yet ellegant look of the Sebenza is in my opinion perfect. It does take up a bit of room in my pocket though and I would love to have a shorter version, UMFAAN, but I deal with it because it is a bad arse little knife. I have never really been fond of wearing a knife by a/the clip.

I agree with the less-is-more attitude relative to knife looks. In fact, I like all my gear to be the highest quality possible without getting into flash and glitz. This was one of the things that attracted me to the Sebbie in the first place.

I almost bought a plain Sebbie for that reason, but I thought an inlay would feel better in my hand so I finally settled on a micarta inlay. I'm glad I did. It feels tough and solid and I really don't worry about scratching it or dinging it up. And even if I did ding it somehow, I don't think I'd be too worried about it (unless the ding was on the blade). Dings from normal wear and tear are good things, IMO. It means you don't have a safe queen. A knife like this needs to be used.

I carry it clipped to my left front pocket. In the right front I was tearing up the bottem of my steering wheel. I don't carry it in the rear pocket b/c of my Kel Tec P32. (I know it is a mousegun but it is better than nothing when clothing dictates a smaller gun.)

I use a Tad Gear belt pouch. Very low profile and my clip doesn't bang into things and get scratched up before it's time.
