Sebbie driving me nuts

OK, first, I love the knife, it's pretty much exactly what I was looking for, but it's making me nuts

It turns out, without me realizing it, that EVERY other knife that I carried with a clip was "tip down", and the sebbie is "Tip up"

I tend to reach in with 2 fingers, grab the knife by the end sticking out, and let it pivot into my hand. Now I have a backwards sebbie. Gaah

Any ideas how to NOT do this?

i used to have the same complaint.

i just got used to it, now all i buy are tip up folders.

i usually remove the clips. if i keep the clips on though, i prefer tip up.

you will get used to it and eventually prefer it. hopefully. :)

You get used to it. I have tip up AND tip down folders and I carry them interchangeably. Never had any fumbling. It just takes some practice.

I carry both tip and tip down but prefer tip up. If my big Skirmish which is tip down, opens somehow in an accident, and not that it would ever happen, but it's aimed right at my man stuff.

If you carry with the blade opening towards the side of your pocket, you won't have a problem getting cut. That's why I tend to carry a tip-up folder in my right front pocket and a tip-down in my right back, or left front pocket. If you can switch the clip from side to side, you have more options.

I have big folders like my Military and Chinook that work very well in the right back pocket and now I rotate the Shallot there also. Tip-up or down is OK by me. You just have to keep it in the back of your mind which knife you have and where the clip is.

My first knife when I got back into knives was tip down. Now I am no authority on knives that's for sure, but every knife since then has been tip up. I'm sure they know what there doing (the manufacturers) I just got used too tip up.

I used to be a tip down man a long time ago. Then bought a bunch on tip up only knives, got used to them, and now ALL my knives are tip up. If they come tip down only, I convert them to tip up.

So, how do you remove them from your pocket and get your thumb onto the stud without fumbling around - that's the real question

But tip-up carry is actually more intuitive and faster on-the-draw in regard to muscle memory.

As you reach into your pocket, your thumb should naturally travel toward the thumblug, whereby when pinched and drawn, you should be able to open it right up.

It's actually faster and requires less of a compromised purchase on the knife than tip-down with a little practice.

You'll see!

Professor.

What I do is to grasp the knife with my thumb inside the pocket, and on the top slab, my index finger outside the pocket and on the spine and my middle finger on the tip of the clip.

I pull the knife out of my pocket with the thumb and middle finger, which results in my index finger resting on the spine when the knife is out of the pocket. At this point, my hand is about ideally positioned to actuate a flipper with my index finger.

Given that there is no flipper, I then slide my thumb up to the stud.

The cognitive key to all of this is focusing on initiating removal of the knife from the pocket via the middle finger on the tip of the clip. With a tip-down configuration, I just grab the knife between my index and thumb, and pivot it as you describe.

I prefer tip-up.

I was a sebenza ONLY man for SEVEN years... Anything else I bought just got sold or given away. THEN I discovered Spyderco & Tip down carry. Now I find anything tip up to be akward in comparison. The Sebenza is a perfect knife, but I prefer Tip down... there is just less fumbling for me.

The seb is such a great knife it does not matter to me though. There are sooooo many aspects of the seb which outshine others.

I converted my seb to a tip down by drilling and tapping a new hi-ride clip onto it after removing the original one. I got the idea from a pic i saw floating around the forums from ages ago. It was more a project for me than anything else. turned out great.

I hear the arguments on the different carry styles, but tip down is safer (for righties, blade spine sits against the pocket liner, and there's no tip poking into you when you have to reach), the hi ride clip is a little more discreet, and presentation is just as fast either way. just my preference.
