Sebenza 25 Edge Thickness

Can a few of you fine folks with the Sebenza 25 measure the thickness just behind the edge? I prefer thin edges, and I would like to know how the 25 is in this regard.

If you go to CRK's new website, there is some info on the new blade grind " large hollow grind " that is a blend of hollow grind and flat grind.

Mine is of the first batch in Nov of last year.
I measure 0.028"-0.030" behind the edge for the lion's share of the blade edge, and right at 0.040" as I approach the tip.
Awfully nice knife; seems like a lot more knife than any of my previous Sebs...21's, Classics, Regular. I realize the blade is 0.140" instead of the usual 0.125". I haven't figured it out yet... This one always wants to nip me...

Thanks for the reply. :)

I would prefer thinner but I'm sure it functions just fine as it is.
I would have been happier if CRK didn't jump on the hard-use bandwagon with the 25. Still a tempting knife.

that would be another reason not to buy a 25, .03 - .04 is way to thick for me. that with a blade stock of .14 inches really kills it for me.
the 25 may be a great knife, but the changes with the blade are, for me, not understandable.
the 21 really can take a beating, but the 25 drifts more to those tacticlol knives. even though its not black painted.
this may offend some people, but i can not understand the changes that mr reeve has done to its newest sebenza

I take it that you have handled one and used it for a bit to get these opinions?

Shaking Head...!!!

The differences make the knife a little more ergonomic in the hand due to the extra thickness in the handles and the new finger cutouts. That being said, the 21 is no slouch! For what it's worth, the 25 is ever bit the slicer that my 21 insingo was. That is saying something. The real world feel is something I personally think holds more weight (for me) than a measurement on paper.

^ Agreed. My 25 is every bit of slicer that my other CRK's are. The new grind is where it's at imho:)

i did some research and you are not the only one saying this. i don't know how he did it, but this new grind must somewhat defy physics.
i mean really, it's thicker behind the edge, almost flat ground and has a thicker stock. yet slices as good as it's predecessor.

must.
get.
25.

by the way, does anyone knows when the lefty version will come out?

This discussion so far is based on a sample size of 1. Hopefully others can measure theirs. I suspect they will be consistent, knowing CRK, but more data are better.

My personal preference is to not exceed 0.025". Thicker than that affects how it cuts for my uses. For example, when cutting the tip off a tube of caulking with an edge thickness of about 0.035, the cut starts but then the plastic tip just breaks off rather than cutting (I heavily reprofiled that knife after observing this). The edge thickness plays a role in ease of cutting and perceived sharpness. A lesser steel with a thinner edge can feel just as sharp cutting as a higher alloy steel even though the lower alloy is in fact duller. Cutting rope requires less force with a thinner edge. Simple physics.

There is always a balance between edge durability and cutting efficiency, and personal preference also plays a role in this. I think CRK chose this edge thickness with their average customer of this size knife in mind and how that average customer would use the knife. The small Sebenza is a different story. I have several made last year that are consistently about 0.020" behind the edge, which I like, but this thickness probably works well for the average customer of this size knife.

Don, your note got my attention. Got some better lighting and 10x goggles for measurement #2.

The 0.028" looks pretty good for 90% of the blade length, but I cannot get more than 0.035" close (within 1/2") to the tip. I came too far over the edge on the first measurement.

Thanks, Sonnydaze, that helps. Still thinking about that 25....

I don't have a military, but the PM2s I have range from a little over 0.020" to about 0.030" (thicker at the tip). The 204P version that arrived today is 0.025 for most of the edge. I suspect the Military varies some as well.

A Spyderco Military is ~0.020", for comparison.

I have a NIB G10 Military in M390. Just measured it, carefully this time. Got a constant 0.028" on the blade edge for the entire length.

Also measured my NIB PM2 in CTS-20CP. It measured 0.027"-0.028" all the way, with the extreme tip at a max of 0.030".

I don't have caliper's but my 25 seem's thinner than my Military or Para 2's. Maybe I need to pick some caliper's up after all.

Jwolf90...not a bad idea. I use mine constantly.. I'm always measuring something, and I use it a great deal for reloading ammo. I know this is a blade forum. :)
But I like to check blade thickness and liners and titanium lock-bar cutouts...whatever. It's fun for me.

My 25 and my Umnumzaan are both at .021 in. behind the edge along the whole length of the blade. My 21 is .016 in. for a comparison.
