Sebenza 25 saved us in car wreck

Last night my roommate and I were driving back to school after break and somehow ended up on the tail end of an 8 car pile up. We ended up with the drivers side of the car landing on the ground, had it not been for the guard rail who knows how far we would have rolled. Anyway, after asking each other if we were ok we needed a way out. I took out my Sebenza 25 and started pounding on the sunroof to no avail. Someone came by with a hammer and managed to crack the windshield but stopped because the car next to us was on fire. I grabbed the Sebenza and pounded like no other, holding it so hard in fact that the jimping cut my own hand. It didn't do much but it helped make a hole, which I then kicked out with my boots. I was in the passenger seat and slid out. My roommate was driving and his airbag didn't deploy but he managed to follow me out of the hole.
By some miracle and possibly some divine intervention we walked away with no injuries. As for the Sebenza its just scratched up a bit at the point near the pivot, opens like a charm and now has some added character. Did it help? I think so, at least a little and in that situation was good enough for me!

I am glad you guys are okay. People used to tell me "you'll feel that in 20 years". Anyway I won't say that and I'm glad both of you walked away. Ode

Glad you're safe. The Zaan is supposed to have a glass breakage protrusion. I always wondered how well that works. Anybody use it?

The Zaan was a close second but I went for the 25, didn't think I would ever need the glass breaker

Glad you are safe! I have a Zaan.....along with numerous other CRKs that I carry. The odds of me needing it and then it actually being the one that I am carrying are pretty slim.

When I suggested that you post this hear I didn't realize folks would first want pics and then suggest a different knife. I thought those who carried a CRK would be interested. Again, glad your ok.

I would say that is a bit unfair to say. While I am sure we would all love to see pics of the knife, those above who first require them are certainly not regulars in this forum. Also, no one suggested a different knife. It was merely stated that the Zaan has a glass breaker.

OP, I think this is most definitely a story worthy of telling and I am glad you made it out in good health! Thanks for sharing with us.

Glad you are safe. That kind of usage mark on your Seb can serve as a reminder to live the day to it's fullest. Congrats.

Glad you all made it out alive. As I have reasoned with my girl friend about my new knife hobby, we could EDC a knife and not find a good reason for it but the day will come when you are in dire need of saving your own or someone else's life and the knife on you may just be the only answer. What you have experienced only serves to reinforce what I had told her. I am going to show your story to her. She did ask for a small Sebenza 21 with CF scales though.

Anyway, you are now married to your 25. It saved your life so I am thinking there will be some sentimental attachments to it. Treasure it and let the scars remind you of what had happened.

You're right. I apologize. I reread it and it does seem a bit harsh and I took post out of context. Sorry about that folks.

Glad both of you are OK! It's a good thing you had your 25 to help you get out.

I carry an old hammer head hatchet, some hand tools, and jumper cables. I helped another driver out once.

I doubt if the glass breaker on a Zaan would be much use on auto glass...from the vids I've seen auto glass is hard to break.

Break the corners of auto glass not the middle or sides. I watched a vid of a TV reporter use a sledge hammer in the middle of a car window.

The window cracked but didn't break.

Glad you made it out OK, and had a little friend to help when you needed it.

Great story. Thanks. Sounds like you pounded with the Seb in a closed position. I have often held mine and noted that I have a good bit of handle on both ends of my clenched fist. For whatever reason I may need that...;-)

I always wondered how the Seb would fair trying to bust glass, now I know. Glad you're OK! Maybe an Umnumzaan is next on your list...

On another note, I used to know a guy who studied a form of martial arts/protection that involved holding a small hard object in your hand and using it as a striking object. Against somebody attacking you, clenching the Seb in your hand with the blade closed and using it as a striking object would probably be a very effective weapon!

This is yet another reason to always carry a knife.

Normally, if you put pressure on the bottom of the side window, the window will shatter.

Yup, I did a few times when I owned one. It's not as good as a spring assisted punch, but better than not having one. Have to be mindful of driving an ungloved hand through the glass, though.
