I'm still undecided about purchasing a Benchmade 950-1 Rift while already owning a Sebenza. One reason why I'm so undecided about the Rift purchase is because the specs ARE so similar between the two. Also, I used to own a 940 which was a great EDC at 2.8 oz - I'm thinking about bringing it back into rotation so that's where the Rift funds would go instead. I'm one of those sorts that prefers to have one or two in rotation than 10-15 in a collection. ;)

Anyway, just putting some thoughts out and looking forward to any sort of input and opinions.

Thanks!

I myself have had a 950-1 a 940.

I recently reacquired a 950, I have no experience with CRK.

I'd say you need to play with a 950 and 940 side by side, I prefer the 950 over the 940 most of the time, but the feel of a 940 is better the rest of the time, along with a smaller footprint in the pocket.

I say go for the 950, you can easily re-sell and pick up a 940 if you aren't satisfied.

940 is S30V 950 is 154CM if steel is a factor for you.

I like the G-10 on the 950 over the coated aluminum handles of the 940, if G-10 scratches it's tough to notice, at least when it's black.

This topic is making me want a 940 again.

That's the other thing, the 940 is smooth, it feels natural for the blade to just glide out, the 950 has a bit more mass to the blade and doesn't have that same quality of light and smooth.

Hey, Skimo.

Thanks for your feedback. I EDC'd a 940 for over 5 years as a primary knife - it served well in that role.

Does the 950's blade move when closed?

Thanks!

The 940 I'm not a big fan of because of the aluminum scales and the narrow blade. The 950 on the other hand is my favorite knife of all time and there has been one in my right front pocket every day since they came out a few years ago. I currently have #6 of 50 of the limited run with M4 blade steel.

None of my 6 various Rifts move when the blade is open or closed, except in the opening direction when you move it.

I personally say do yourself a favor and get one but I am very biased, but for very good reasons. It's an awesome knife.

my 950 doesnt have any play, its a tank. I also have a 940. The 940 is easier to carry since is lighter and thinner. They are different so it depends on what you want.

The 940, imo is brilliant for EDC, Rift seems to be a bit chunky but I'm sure its just as good of a knife material/quality wise. It seems to fit a different role than the CRK though.

Both the 940 and 950 are great alternatives if you want to protect your high dollar Sebenza from damage. Even though CR designs his knives to be used, I'd have a pretty difficult time stressing a nice LE or Mammoth inlay Seb very hard. No such reservations with one of these BM's tho, or a good Spydie for that matter.

For full disclosure - I traded both my 940 and 950 for Seb's, which I carry pretty much everyday. It's hard to return once you've gone over, and the fact that CR will refurbish even heavily used knives back to new for very reasonable rates is a big  in my book.

Like CRK, BM will so some blade work and replace damaged blades for a reasonable price.

I myself EDC'd (didn't know that phrase till I joined the online knife community) a BM 722s for 10 years till it got lost, I now carry a 720.

The 950 is good at staying closed.
