Hey guys, I am a new Sebenza owner (Large 21 Insingo) and got a question about the ano on the thumbstud. How long before it starts wearing off and can anyone redo it? I have had the knife for 3 days now and it is starting to fade. Not too worried about it, but I do like to blue look and mainly just wondering.

thanks

actually, if i may partially hijack your thread, i have a question as well.

if anyone has a nib sebenza w/blue thumbstud, never handled, or handled very little.

is the thumbstud entirely anodized?

on both mine the grooves are blue, but the tip and second ring down are not. the coloring, and lack of, is consistent throughout.

im wondering if this is from wear or how it came, since both have been carried a lot, and i cant remember what they looked like new.

sorry, i guess i should offer a response to your question. :o

im sure crk could either replace or refinish the thumbstud. i do not know at what cost.

when you have the blade refinished they put a new lug in, they are press fit so you get a new one when you send it in, at least that is what i have gathered from the reading i have done in the CRK forum

When I got mine I noticed that the thumbstud looked lighter on the ano then the lanyard pin and the blue standoff. Haven't tried to use windex on it yet though.

what is the windex for?

the thumbstuds on mine also look lighter at a distance, but i think that is mainly because portions of the thumbstud are not blue, but bare metal. comparing the portions that are actually colored, they look the same. or very close.

CRK says on their website to use windex to clean the ano to make it look better. All of the pics I see of Sebenza users shows that the blue ano goes away from use. How long does that take?

depends on how much you rub the stud.... it will wear off consider it a badge of honor or character :D mine is quite old and the tip is shiney silver the rest is faded blue- dark blue

The whole stud is anodised, it would either have to be masked before anodising or buffed off after to get a two tone finish. That would seem like a lot of trouble to go to just for a thumb stud.

The blue on my Sebs lasted about a week or two of use every day before it started to fade so I just removed the blue. I like the silver studs and specers more any way.

thought so, but both of mine are worn exactly the same, which i thought a bit odd.

The color perceived from CRK's annodization is caused by the deposition of oxides on the titanium surface, which causes selective interference/reinforcement of visible light, much like the colors in a rainbow, or bands of color in an oily surface viewed on a sunny day. Contaminants like finger oils get on annodized surfaces (like the blue thumbstud) and reduce the effectiveness of the interference/reinforcement. The windex is used to clean the contaminants from the annodized surface, thus making the oxides more efficient in selectively reflecting the light, and bringing back the color.

Through use, the oxide layer on the thumbstud gets worn away. For me, that wear happens pretty quickly -- within a week of EDC and use, the tip of the thumbstud is no longer annodized, and as a result, is silver in color. I tend to have mollyssurvival's attitude for an EDC, but if you prefer a consistent color on your EDC's thumbstud, you can either take the annodizing off of the thumbstud (some polishing compound and a buffing tip on a dremel tool will do it in a couple seconds), or have CRK install non-annodized thumbstuds.

Ohw and apparently it is not ''that'' hard to do at home :

But then again... If those thumb studs are compressed... I would say get it refurbished by Chris reeve...

@ Socom elite

Dont worry about it... the top may fade a little... But that just gives it character IMO  And inside the ''grooves'' it wont wear that easily.
