Hello,

Can someone point out the *functional* pros and cons of the B&W Damascus used in the Sebenzas?

Strength?
Edge holding?
Brittleness?
Hardness?

Thanks,

-john

Since Chris Reeve uses Devin Thomas Damascus in their blades, if you have already discussed it with Chris Reeve Knives, my suggestion is to contact Devin Thomas and he can give you all the detail and info that you need regarding his damascus.

He has a website at: http://www.devinthomas.com and his email address is:

Moved to Chris Reeve's Forum. Where we can get his advice.

Welcome to BF cc!

No problem John. This is a big place and it takes a while to get around.

I have a small Sebenza in blued pin-stripe damascus, but I have to say it is a shelf sitter. Should you choose it the Devin Thomas Damascus should seve well. I would think that it will sharpen faster, but might not keep an edge as long as the same blade in S-30V since in most cases Damascus is not hardened as high on the rockwell scale as stainless steels go. From experience it is pretty tough to beat the edge-holding of the Crucible steels and as I understand it 30V was developed for the cutlery industry.

Now I am a very big fan of damascus and Devin makes some beautiful and servicable examples. If you like what you see and want to use it, you will enjoy it. I would consider it a dressier version of a hard working knife in S30V.

I have found the edge holding on my double high carbon spiral damascus blade to be noticably better than BG-42 in my large benza. It also cuts better and realy rips into fibrus materials. The nature of the multi layering causes this effect I think. It does not thus make a great shaver... Its a little rough for that!:p

My only real concern is rust, which I am obsessive about. Still it is an EDC knife and I do carry it (small benza, dark walnut inlay and spiral damask).

As to toughness, the edge got dinked by a coin in my pocket:(

Never happen again thanks to a G2! Cheers Gary!

Well, since my emphasis is on functionality and there doesn't seem to be a clear functional advantage for the damascus, I ended up ordering a small, plain in stainless.

Should be a step up from my Air SOG, eh?

:-)

Thanks for the help.

Snapped a few pics just for fun:
