Sebenza blade chipping

I have an old ATS-34 P sebenza, and I recently got it back from refurbishing. The blade was sharp enough for me, nothing amazing, but they also did not polish out every flaw in the blade (it was pretty screwed up but still, from all I've heard about this company, I was expecting a brand new looking knife.)

I've been carrying it every day, cutting things like paper and envelopes, nothing rough, and I just noticed that on the curve of the blade, there is significant chipping, visible and definitely detrimental. This is not from abuse of the knife, I barely use it at all, since I have two SAKs on me all the time (keychain and soldier). I also have never dropped the knife, used it as a baton, etc. I did not expect problems like this from such a high end knife, and I have no idea how to fix this chipping. I don't really want to send it back to the shop, because I don't have another locking folder to use in the meantime at my current location. What should I do?

if you have a belt grinder you could give it a try. i know of no other way to repair a chipped blade.

btw, i would never again go near a belt grinder. the last time i used one in wood shop i ground the nail completely off my rt ring finger!:D

The only shop "experience" I have is with a sharpmaker. I wouldn't trust myself with a belt grinder on my SAKs let alone my sebenza.

if the chip is visibly noticeable, then reprofiling might be the only solution, which means sending it back or going to a sharpener you trust.

This really annoys me, I've been having lots of problems with a lot of my knives lately, all of them from reputable manufacturers (benchmade, spyderco, CRK etc).

Are there any sharpeners that someone can reccommend in NYC? (I live on the lower east side, just in case there are several ;) )

For a knife like that I wouldn't trust anyone but CRK to fix the problem. Do yourself a favor and send it back. I know it's a hassle but if someone else screws it up there's no way to replace that ATS-34 blade.;)

Another vote in sending it back to Chris Reeve & Co. I would also mention the issues you talked about when you got the knife back. They may be accomodating and polish out the blade and get the knife to your expectations.

I would definitely suggest sending it back to CRK.

A side note about the chipping on the blade... You said you had been carrying it every day... The only thing that I could see that would cause the chipping from my experience would be the possibility of metal objects such as keys or coins coming in contact with the knife as they are drawn out of the pocket that the knife is clipped to... I may be completely wrong on this, but this happened a lot to my Sebbie when I carried my keys in the same pocket, and thus it changed my EDC arrangement a little.

Travis (Sorry if this post was useless.)

Couldn't the temper have been affected on that portion of the blade if the edge was held for too long on the belt grinder when re-sharpening? Did it chip readily before sending it in for the initial refurbishing?

CRK will fix it...just be specific in the letter that you enclose with the knife.

Keep us posted on the out come of this, if you decide to send it back for a redo.

Do you think that they will charge me to fix this? To be honest, after spending 56 dollars to refurbish this knife, I don't even want to pay to ship it out, let alone the 10 dollars the first time, considering the condition that it came back in.

It looked good coming back, but it wasn't what I had expected after hearing so much about this company.

I would encourage you to give them a call. Explain the situation in full, and let them respond with what you will undoubtedly find as the highest integrity service in the industry.
