Sebenza blade stonewashing

While recovering from oral surgery today and getting an opportunity for some quality fondling time of my large and small 21, I noticed something. Maybe it's the drugs, but my small 21 born in summer of 2012 almost seems to have a slightly darker blade than my large born in December 2013. One might could call it slightly more aggressive stonewashing? I was curious to know if there's been certain points throughout the Sebenza lifespan that the blade tumbling process was changed which I'm sure it has, but when did you notice it?

Yep, seems to be a topic few want to talk about.

I posted this subject as well.
The "new" finish is more of a satin than the "industrial" look of the older ones.

I like the older, but fat chance of them going back.:p

I prefer the older, more aggressive stonewashing as well, the new 'shinier' finish just doesn't do anything to hide scratches on the blade.

Thanks for posting.
There has definitely been a change in finish - probably another medium.
I like the new look better.
It's more like "satin" (as gull wing said so accurate).
Have a speedy recovery.

I like the finish on my 25. While not as aggressive as other stonewashed blades, like Hinderer, I think it fits CRK. My other CRK has satin finish and the flats seem to be similar to my 25.

I just picked up a Large 21 from September of 2011 and I immediately noticed that its stonewashing was heavier than what's on my other 21 (clip point), my Insingo or my Umnum (all of which are more recently built knives). The 2011's SW reminds me of how Hinderer does it. It's heaving and more reflective (shiny?). The newer ones are definitely more satiny. Not sure which I prefer. I'm more used to the newer look... so it's what I "expect" and what seems proper... but the older look is kinda growing on me too. It's all good I guess. :)

I'm not sure what year they changed, but I noticed it when I sent one for a refurb 2 or 3 years ago.

I much prefer the older stonewash they used. It looked better than anyones IMO.

I like them both in their own way. I haven't seen how Hinderer does it in person, but my darker one sort of reminds me of how the wash on the Spyderco Southard is, or at least what I can remember from the couple days I spent with it. Maybe not quite as dark as the Southard but maybe some similarity.

Just got a 2014 large Insingo micarta, hoping the stonewash would be as shiny as my 2011 Insingo and as brilliant as I remember my older micarta Sebs being, but it's not. It's just about as matte as the 25 blade finish.

Heather told me that they changed the process a while back when I called to ask if my old pivot Zaan could have the blade finished like my 25, i.e. a more satin finish to match the finish on the larger pivot.

She said they could, it was $45 I believe and I just haven't done do yet.

But yes, the finish has changed to a more "finer" finish.

IMO the new CRK stonewash is my least favorite out of Hinderer, Strider, and the Doug Ritter griptilian. It tends to make the CRK less tactical and more gentlemanly. An Umnumzaan with any of the above stonewashes would be badass.

I agree. Although I really like hinderers wash as well. Both very aggressive and look great. Another vote for the old.
