Sebenza Classic 2000. What do you think?

I just saw this knife in the April 2000 issue of Knives Illustrated.
My GOD(!) this is a nice knife.

Pricing issues aside, I don't like the feel of the Sebenza. The access to the Integral Lock just did not feel good in my hand. Of course, this is all personal preference, but, well, you know...
I saw this knife in KI and I can tell that, for me, this new handle profile is a vast improvement. It reminds me of the old Benchmade Kodiak handle, which I really enjoyed because it fit my hand and was cmfortable to hold and use.
I'm almost afraid to handle one, fearing that "need" will settle in and start gnawing at me. You all know what I'm talking about:
you can't stop thinking about it,
you start scheming how you can wrangle it into the budget, yada, yada, yada...
Sooo many knives...

I am the same I have seen it but not held it yet but I like the old original look of it...

For those who haven't seen the latest issue of Knives Illustrated, here's a treat! I can't wait to get my hands on this:

I think this will make Sebeenza's even harder to get. I, like many others, have a personal preference for the feel of the "old" Sebenza's. Now, we have damascus and decorated models to add to the mix.

All in all, I think things look very good for fans of the Sebenza.

When I got the first edition of the ATS-34 Sebenza, I was immediately hooked. The design was simple but elegant and best of all, it worked great. Then came the new handle form and I felt it was a step down. I never liked the little cut-outs on the bottom and the lock became more difficult to disengage (try it with gloves!). I bet many people must have felt that way and that's the reason CRK offers the old style again. I wouldn't have named it "Classic" but "Original", that's the way I look at it.

BTW posting a scan from a magazine in this forum without permission is not a good idea. It violates the copyright law. That's the difference to a scan you made yourself. For more pictures go to the CRK forum, where James Matthis has posted some scans.

Jedi Knife,
They cost the same as the current models.

Misque,

I too didn't like the feel of the Sebenzas I handled at Blade last year. I tried. I pick up several models, went away, came back and tried again. Nope, it just wasn't for me. Now I wonder whether I held an "original" or the newer model...

But it's obviously a great knife for the number of fans it has here. I love the blade geometry and the integral lock. I rather have a lock that is reliable over one that is easy to open, personally.

sing,
If your like me, then it was the newer model you tried. The one with the stair step looking cutouts on the finger choil. Just didn't feel good to me. This classic though, looks like a contender.
Now, if they would just price it like the factory made folder that it is instead of a custom. Drat!! I said I wasn't gonna flog that dead pricing horse issue again.

I think I will like this version better.

I just sold my Sebenza due to financial issues, but when I replace it, I think it will be with a Classic.

Misque,

I just saw Knives Illustrated and the "classic" pictures. I think that finger cutout looks much more comfortable.

Hmm... What's the price on those?

Same as the current models, I believe.

I have never been a Sebenza fan. Mostly because IMO it is a production knife at custom prices. Now please, James Segura and all you Sebenzawhatchamacallits, please dont flame me. My intent in posting this is to say that the Classic is a beautiful looking knife. This one definitely catches my eye.
Nice job CRK.

Now, if they only were priced right

Honest, no offense intended.

Lifter, let's be serious here for a minute. If you had a product that you could not keep up with the demand, would you lower the price?
It really bothers me when people bi**h about the price. You don't have to buy it.
I'm glad if they don't raise the price; I would.
This is the first time I have said this and I feel better now.
Sorry Lifter, I just read your profile.

I really like the look of the blade, but I can't say the same for the handle. It's too "arty" for my tastes. It would be great with the same pattern handle as the blade.

Well, I for one prefer the new handle style on my Sebenza, without the large cutout. Or is that now the old style? Or maybe the new-old style?

This is sorta like the New Coke/Coca Cola Clasic of knives!

I've never liked the "dressed-up" Sebenzas much myself, they just don't look right to me with damascus steel, stone inlay, etc. But I guess all of you Sebenzanistas need some excuse to buy more than one, right?

RGray-Rick, my post was meant to compliment the classic. And I agree with you, with the demand for the Sebenza, why would anyone lower their prices. I was just stating my reason for not buying one. Hey, if it's what someone else wants and they can afford it, go for it. Just not me.

That is exactly the way I have started thinking about this whole Sebenza thing.
Don't like the pricing, but hey, if you can afford it and like it, then go for it.
As for me, the scalloped scale(current) version feels odd in my hand, but I really like the original (classic) version.
Just not enough to lay down $325.00 for a factory made knife.
Not EVEN saying they are bad knives. That would be silly and untrue, as the sheer number of people who swear by this knife would inundate this thread with positive testimonies, can attest.
Not a bad knife, just far above the upper price range limit for me.
