Sebenza: Classic or Regular?

Which model do you prefer and why?

I’m thinking of getting a Chris Reeve Sebenza with Damascus steel. Please note that this knife will not replace my EDC or any other knife that I currently use for specific tasks, so it will not get much use. I’ll just want one as a collectors item. If I’m happy with it, I might complement it with the same model in S30V Stainless Steel.

Comments & advice will be greatly appreciated!

I also prefer the classic. The thumb area looks ugly to me on the regular.

I'd go for a LE with Damascus if a drawer queen is what you want. The regular is being phased out and I feel the LE is a good choice for collecting/investing purposes. That being said I also prefer the classic for using purposes.

Thank you for your replies. I’ll probably get the Classic.

You caught me. Thank you for translating my ‘so it will not get much use’ as ‘drawer queen’ which is, I must admit it, closer to the truth :-)

I like the reg. Sebbie better in both sizes. The reg. handles better in an edge in pull cut. YMMV

Also I like that the guard is closer to the blade on a reg. VS a classic. Here is a pic :D

When upside down, your thumb is closer to the edge of the blade. I also like the looks of a reg. better, but again YMMV!

So................. if you ask me. :D Go with a reg. :D

And...why would you not USE it? They can refurb Dama blades too! I asked. ;) The steel acts very much like VG-10, and thats a great EDC steel if I ever seen one!

Heres a older EDC pic. Yes, I carry and USE her.....cardboard and ALL!

It would be very hard to go wrong with a Sebbie! Please let us know what you get.

The Reg.feels better in my hand and when I manipulate it. You can't go wrong. ;)

I lean toward the Large Classis, but in the small Sebanzas it's pretty much a toss up.

i have had classics and regulars, i love both.

for your purposes, go with the regular. they will be gone soon.

The Sebenza was one of the most disappointing knives I've ever
owned. Incredible workmanship and high status, but my Benchmark
Griptillians out-cut 'em and hold an edge better.
Your results at home may vary...........The Sebenza'a reputation made
it easy to dump at small loss, its most redeeming quality IMHO.

Thank you for posting a great picture!

Why not use it? It’s the old story of not needing a new knife but really wanting one :-) It will get occasional light use.

I recently handled several Sebenza knives at a local dealer (all regular models though, in both sizes) and really liked the solid feel of opening and closing it and the perfect fit and finish on each one.

The guy in the store directed me to the Chris Reeve website to check out the Classic and I got really excited about getting either a Regular or Classic with the Damascus blade.

For EDC I rotate several Spyderco’s that I’m perfectly happy with. But I’m sure the Sebenza will get some pocket time.

The Regular's blade is more work frendly, in that it's wider near the tip. It allows you to do lots if tasks without being concerned with breaking the tip. Plus it just looks better("work" knives should not have slender tips)
IF YOU WANT A REGULAR GET IT SOON, THEY ARE DISCONTINUED

I can't comment on the classic having never handled one, but I recently purchased a regular and love it. The slightly beefier tip was the deciding factor for me.

I got my first Sebenza just over a week ago - I went for a Large Classic. I was on the fence for a while debating the Regular vs. the Classic. In the end I went for the Classic for a few reasons, but keep in mind I have never handled the Regular, so this is just based on the pictures and what I read, and from others that do own both.

I think the lock cut out on the Classic makes it easier to access the stud, and makes it easier to close. (I live in Canada, so I always try to factor in how it would feel when wearing gloves) I already had some blades with a similar profile to the Regular, but I did not own anything with the Classic blade shape. And to me, the Classic is what comes to mind when I think Sebenza, sort of the same way the CQC-7 comes to mind when I think of an Emerson.

I have been carrying the Classic for just over a week now, I have used it to prepare meals, and it has been on a couple hikes, so far I really like it - sort of grows on me more each day.
