Sebenza clunk/pre-catch at the end of blade opening????

Question: 85% of the way open, just before the lock engages and blade is open it feels like there is a partial engagement or a clunk as something moves. i don't recall this, but I just got my Sebenza back and noticed the blade didn't open very smoothly and looked like a lot of gunk around the pivot, so took it apart, cleaned it, put some grease between blade and washers, put it back together. It seems to function fine, i just don't remember this clunk towards the end of opening it. Took it apart again, washers and all seem just fine, put it back together and same thing. I am fine with it if it isn't something that is going to damage the knife (i.e. I didn't put it together right).

I know I have become spoiled with IKBS knives, so if it is somewhat normal, I will just ignore the pre-catch to the lock.

Is it the blade slipping off the ceramic ball used to keep it closed?

Great to hear.....I just never paid that close attention before I guess. Thanks for the input.

It is normal. It is almost like a stop point before the lock engages.

Ehhhm...no, he's trying to point out that a ceramic detent would only be in an Umnumzaan.

The Sebenza has a ceramic ball that slips into a detent on the blade to keep it in the closed position. Standard on most liner lock and RIL knives. Thank you, Michael Walker!

Almost certain it is the tang sliding off the ball onto the lockbar just before lockup... you could take a close look and verify.

My bad then. I have never looked at it closely but figured that the ball detent was steel. I'm pretty sure they originally were steel (?) - could be wrong.

ding ding. :D

Double ding ding :D The tiny ball rolls happily along the surface of the blade steel until it a) sinks in the the detent hole in the closed position, or b) slips of the blade surface right before the lock tab engages in the open position.

Sidenote - that little ball can get gunked up and be the culprit in the blade not traveling smoothly between the two positions. Get familiar with taking the knife apart and cleaning it regularly. It's a rewarding exercise and not difficult at all.
