Sebenza comfort question

thinking about taking the plunge . . .

I have no interest in a safe queen. I want a good knife that is comfortable to use, so my question is:

Is a plain sebenza (large) more comfortable to use (and flip open), or is a sebenza with, say, micarta strips more comfortable?

I had a knife with smooth scales that wanted to jump out of my hand when I flipped it open, so I'm wondering if the micarta (or other) strips will give it more grip when flipping it, and more comfort when using it.

Thanks for any advice!

I'm about to buy my first as well. I handled the basic models at a gun show, so I can give you a little input.

First off, the action on a Sebenza is different from knives you've used in the past. They really can't be flipped open, at least not like you are used to.

Also, the plain scales felt very boxish and loose in my hand, and the small versions handles were way too short. I am certainly going to opt for a large classic with inlay, probably micarta.

I have both inlaid and plain. Wearing snug pants like Levis, I find the plain Sebbie is easier to draw from the pocket; the inlaid ones are just a touch thicker and I can notice the difference. With slacks or looser pants, it is no longer an issue.

The plain is very slim and I too like the addition of inlays to give it some greater "heft" in the hand.

i have a classic, which is easily flicked open. took a little practice because of the stud placement.

very comfortable. i prefer the look of the regulars, but find the classic more comfortable.

I like them plain because they are thinner. In general I like plain framelocks, simple and functional.

I love my large micarta. The micarta really fills my hand, and the knife is comfortable to hold in any position.

The plain large is super comfortable to wear (which is what I do 99% of the time), the large with inlays is super comfortable to use (which is what i do 1% of time.)

I use it a lot, but the truth is it stays on my waistband (IWB) 12 hours a day, and I probably have it "in hand" for a matter of minutes a day. It doesn't feel slick or dangerous, so I choose to EDC the plain.

Those inlays are sure pretty though!

I would prefer the inlaid for 'using' comfort--the slightly greater width just feels better in my hand. I have a small regular plain that I added wooden scales to myself to get the better feel.

Greg, is the regular in the images thread with the limited edition style inlay yours?

If it is, nice work

I say just get the plain. You save a few bucks that way.

In my experience the micarta isn't grippy enough to make a difference in grip security. The extra thickness may help a little though.

I would say actually the opposite. That's what I had to decide when I got my large micarta..whether or not to just settle for a plain. If you really want an inlay, go for it, rather than buy a plain now, and then buy an inlay later.

Micarta inlay feels more secure and comfortable IMO.

I agree. I've owned a wood inlay large Classic, which I sold because I found the Micarta large Classic inlay much more comfortable. I also prefer the tumbled blade of the Micarta model over the polished blade of the wood inlay models--scratches are less visible on the tumbled blade.

I like the micarta in the large classic, it just feels good. I use it more for EDC. That said, my large regeular Sebbie is in the dressier mode.

I absolutely love my Small Classic Micarta. It is super comfortable in the hand and very easy in my pocket as well. The micarta provides just the right grip and thickness needed. I'm not surprised that it seems to be the most popular model around here.

I've only owned the plain jane handled ones and felt it was just fine. The large in particular, although perhaps a bit bigger than I normally like was quite comfortable in the hand with thick enough handle slabs to feel secure but it also fits my large hands better than the small Seb which I found to be ok but a tad smallish. If I had my way I'd love to see a folder in between both the small and large Sebbies in size from Chris since that to me would be perfect but not enough to let it keep me from buying another large, which I did just yesterday.
