Sebenza Date Stamp and Blade ID Questions

When did CRK start using the date stamps inside the scales? I have a large regular (BG42) that I bought new in 98 with a born on date in 98 which has no date stamp inside, old pocket clip, and no markings on the blade. I recently bought an unused large regular (for my son) with no card and am trying to date it and ID the blade. It has no date stamp inside the scales, new type pocket clip, and where the "S" would be stamped on an S30V blade, there is what I thought was a "5" (could be an S) scribed in the blade. It looks like it was hand scribed with a carbide scribe. Were the early S30V blades marked like this before they were stamped with the "S"?

Thanks, Merk.

Can you post pictures?

Here's a good comparison photo for general reference:

Guys, I have a 2008 Lgr Sebbie MM Classic CGG "Straight Ahead" the Blade has a "C" on it, the birth card says S30V. Does the "C" mean something different. THX for any info

The "C" stand for Classic, as in Classic Sebenza.

Is it normal to have a C stamped blade on 21, i took apart a small 21 freedom sebenza and the blade is stamped C, that's what the classics were stamped right, shouldn't mine be stamped S. It is from 2008. Are classic blades and 21 blades identical in shape?

CRK started stamping the slabs sometime in mid-1997. It is possible for knives assembled after that time to be put together from handle slabs that were "non-stamped".

From your description, it seems your son may have a knife that has had the clip replaced. CRK used the straight style clip until sometime between 2000 and 2002, but if the slab are unmarked then it too should have been assembled around 1997.

I've read of one other reference to a blade with a number etched by hand vs. an "S" or "C" stamped into the metal. Ron (440Hard) had the following post a year or so ago...

Hope this helps.
