It doesn't belong here, as it is NOT a custom knife.

Huh? At this point it's as "custom" as many "custom knives."

TKC is correct, it's not a custom knife, or if you want a handmade knife. It's a production knife. The reality, though, is that it's made the same way with the same production tools and techniques as many custom knifemakers use. The only difference is that Reeve has employees. Oh wait, so do some of those custom makers!

The work looks pretty good. I'm curious about what Chris thinks of these customizations to his knives. I know that in the past he has had problems with it.

It certainly is a "custom" knife. Now, handmade...not the knife, but the customization?

Who cares, it's prettier than the original "grey turd.". :)

Suz is right, it is a modded factory knife, and there is a whole separate sf for that:

Discussions attempting to define custom/handmade or what is or isn't never get far even after hundreds of replies and thousands of views. However, as Steven states, I believe most will agree that there's a much more appropriate sub-forum for this knife than here.

Exactly what custom knife does the "scale" fit?

You know that circle R logo looks exactly like the logo that has won several "Manufactured Knife" awards at the Blade Show.

If the scales do fit a custom knife, does CRK know their logo has been stolen by a custom knife maker.

Any particular reason this has not been moved to the CRK forum or maker forum?

The scale with Reeves "R" is the original scale from CRK.

Hi Marrow,

I already knew this, but thanks for playing! :D

The scale with Reeves "R" is the original scale from CRK.

If that is the case then why is anything for a factory knife in the custom knife forum?

Someone from oversees, with 33 total posts, who probably speaks English as a second language, happened to put up a post in the wrong forum.

That's right 92 degrees, and a bunch of people absolutely MUST have this post in the correct forum.

However, let's review history. On this forum, you all have accepted as "custom" knives product from makers that show many identical blade blanks that later become identical knives (except for variations in handle material) all made with the assistance of shop "assistants"...why not this guy from Italy? The dictionary defintion of "custom" fits this knife scale.

Hey why don't you all start a long thread on what someone is allowed to post in this forum. Then we can rename the forum, perhaps calling it the "Non-factory custom handmade edged weapon" forum. You can then post the rules at the top like the traditional forum.

TADA!

This is the Custom & Handmade Knives Forum! True not an overly long list...but it tells anyone who posts here what is allowed.

Was the scale custom made? No

Was the scale modified from a previously created scale for a factory knife? Yes

As such should this scale be in the Custom and Handmade Knives forum? No.

Instead of have a pity party with 92 Degrees about this individuals lack of English skills (which apparently they are good enough as we all understood what he was saying) and acting like we are picking on him.

What would help him the most is for a BF Moderator to re-direct his post of his customization of a factory knife scale to the Chris Reeve Sub-forum. Where he would both "Rock" and be "The Man". Receiving major kudos for his work from those who would appreciate the most!

I'm confused. My understanding is that the scale on the knife is custom made, 1 of 1. I don't see how that was modified from a CRK scale. I agree, the post should have been moved without drama. I just think it's funny in light of the fact that I've owned "custom knives" from prominent makers (some of them are featured on your site, Les) and in two occasions I've had the need for makers to fix something and I've been told that the maker " will be doing a batch of parts for those in a few weeks." There's no pity party here...just no pig pile either.

Hey 92

I'm confused

The scale is an exact fit for a factory knife. This scale has absolutely nothing to do with Custom & Handmade knives.

Lets help relieve the confusion a little more for you.

When you speak of makers working on a batch of parts. This is called (in the business world) economy of scale. In other words it is more efficient, profitable and quicker to build multiple parts at one time. This allows the maker to create more knives and hopefully make enough profit to keep going.

But to the point, these makers who are making multiple parts at one time....are the ones who designed and made the "ORIGINALS" of these parts.

They did not take an existing custom knife....take measurements and create a one of a kind scale to put on the custom or handmade knife.

In other words, it doesn't matter if the makers construction technique fits your definition or not. They were the originators...not a copy cat. Whether the copy cat is doing a one of a kind copy or not. it is still a copy.

I hope this alleviated some of your confusion.

Les you know very well that some of the "custom" knives you sell on your website differ from a CRK knife only in the number of people working in the shop. You have been selling the exact same knife (not even with custom scales) from some makers for years. For example, the base Terzuola ACTF. I own one and am quite happy it's exactly like the one I saw on your table 5 years ago...I got it from Bob for less money last year :)

Don't get me wrong, that's not bad, you are just the pot calling the kettle black.

I removed the original post and direct responses to it to a new thread in the CRK forum.
As most posts remaining here made clear, customization does not make a custom knife.

For purposes of moderation, we designate a maker or manufacturer as custom or production, with few exceptions to the category they have been assigned. After-market changes have no impact on these designations.

Brownshoe,

I refer you to my previous post:

This is the Custom & Handmade Knives Forum! True not an overly long list...but it tells anyone who posts here what is allowed.

Was the scale custom made? No

Was the scale modified from a previously created scale for a factory knife? Yes

As such should this scale be in the Custom and Handmade Knives forum? No.

We are not talking about Chris Reeve, we are talking about someone who copied the dimensions off of a Factory knife. Copied it (I suspect with out Chris's permission) and made a scale.

There is no pot calling the kettle black.

The "Scale" is not part of a custom knife.

The "Scale" was not made by a custom knife maker.

The "Scale" is merely a copy of something that already exists.

Now, I will let you continue to bang your head against the wall over this. Enjoy.
