sebenza holiday fun

Hey guys,

A couple of weeks ago I spent my summer holidays in the beautiful country of France, near the coast, the province Vendee to be precise

I carried my highly illegal (according to French law) small sebenza the whole time and had a blast using it. Perfect for holiday chores such as cutting up fruits for the kids on the beach, coocking, sharpening pencils being mister handyman around the campsite, cutting away armhair for the fun of it, maintenance on hands and feet, stropping and sharpening fun with my dmt diafolds and some good old whittling.

The sebenza, with peter_r scales, held up quit well at the beach. Sand does get in all cracks, also those of your knife :) I had to take it apart, well, had to... I took it apart a couple times because I wanted to, the action had gotten a little less smooth and sand was making some grating noise being stuck between the blade and the handles. So some maintenance was required, nothing special and the sebenza functioned perfectly before and after the maintenance stop.

A little washing up after cutting fruit and letting it force dry in the heat of the French sun was all that was needed to keep her clean. Letting fruit juice dry on the blade had no ill effects on the steel. I had some salt water contact now and then but no rust or any blemishes formed.

I did find the pocket clip a little irritating while whittling. I tried to make a wooden chain (3 parts) over the span of a couple of days and the clip started poking my hand, I did not get a blister, but the hand was red and irritated. The chain failed miserably, but I knew this before hand since I did not get a good piece of wood. Still, I got pretty far ;)

My overall experience was great, I've been carrying the small sebenza for quite some time now. I love the umnum a little more, but it's too big for me to carry around and feel comfortable with. The ummie is more of a weekend thing for me.
The small sebenza has a perfect size, is a fairly good slicer, has a nice point (it's not a regular, which has more belly) and shape, keeps a good edge and is very light to carry.

Also, since the Dutch soccer team was in the world cup final, the orange color was rocking!!! Saw three games in a state from soberness to half drunkennes in the campsite bar along with other Dutchies and had a blast there. Probably ran as many miles as the soccer players during those matches cause my three kids didn't have their leash attached and were running all over the place :D Of course, I had to run after them all the time

The s30v steel is a bi*tch to strop and sharpen, but the dmt diafolds have no problem with it whatsoever (C/F, XF, XXF, then strop). Holidays are great to improve and experiment with your sharpening skills. I was slapping the little knife to the strop about every day
It does seem to always have a little 'toothiness' no matter what I do though. Hair popping sharp and all, still feels toothy.

oh, and it came out of my pocket three times.. the clip got stuck behind the chair twice. The second time it was so bent out of shape I had to take it off and repair it/bend it back into shape, but that was after it fell out of my pocket doing nothing special, because it had bent previously and I hadn't noticed it was bent...

so, just a little write up for you all to enjoy (hopefully) and of course some pics to follow, enjoy 'm!

cheers

the setup: beer, blades and biat... uhmm, no wait a minute, not that, more like children and sun lotion :)
strop, dmt's belgian beer and a sunscreen bottle that was used up, rinsed and filled with water to use for wetting my dmt's. I now use that one at home all the time, best dispenser I've found and used so far

sebenza doing a decapitation. Now hold your horses, it's not a cold blooded kill. Just a good old mercy killing since my kids were torturing insects every now and then (they're young)

Great post. I really enjoyed reading this. Sounds like the Sebenza did a wonderful job for you (like anyone would think otherwise). Sounds like a nice trip!

Looks like you and your sebenza had a great time on vacation !!! I enjoyed reading your post as well. Thanks for sharing your thoughts on the sebenza and for taking to time to write them down and post pics. I am sure many others will chime in with their enjoyment of them as well.

Great Post My Friend

thanks guys, you're more than welcome. Good to hear you enjoy it!

Very nice scale on your small sebenza, great pictures, thank you for sharing.

i envy you sir. those orange scales and orange bezel on the planet ocean flow so smoothly together. Thanks for posting!

Great post, sounds like you had fun!

Not to get off topic, but might I ask for some Belgian beer recommendations?

THanks, I actually contacted Peter about the scales because I was getting the planet ocean and wanted a matching color combo :)

Yes, try them all (not in one go :)) and pick your poison. At the moment I like 'mort subite' the geuze variant ("instant death"). What you see is the 'kriek' variant. A little sweet/sour fruit combo beer. Very nice for really hot days. Make sure the beer is chilled very well.

Cool pics, liking that orange on the Sebbie, and nice post. Enjoyed your reviews by the way, esp. the F1 and Seb vs XM; both were filled with helpful info.
