Real curious if I can get away with a Sebenza as a NYC friendly knife
meaning

a. not tactical looking
b. tight pivot to prevent flicking open

Thanks!

I "can" flick mine, but not very consistently. I would think the average person would find it rather difficult to do on the first attempt. A small Seb isn't very "tactical" looking, but that's a good thing to me.

If you are talking about flipping a Sebenza from tightly closed, I reckon that would be very difficult. It's not that the pivot is tight (the pivot is basically non-adjustable, the scales tighten onto a 'stop' ring, not onto the blades or washers--see the thread on cleaning). It also has a ball detent that holds the blade closed.
I haven't been able to flip my small Sebenza at all.

Both my large Sebenzas are well-broken in and I can snap them out with a quick flick of the thumbstud.

I think the small Sebbie blade just doesn't have enough mass to flip all the way open without a manual assist. First you have to beat the ball-detent, then I have to thumb mine open about 45 degrees before I can flick it into lock.

Of course, no one wants to bet wrong and lose a fine knife to someone else's opinion. Have you considered the Mnandi?

I'm carrying my Mnandi as much if not more than my Sebbies recently . . . of course, I work in an office so my cutting challenges are seldom major. But that's a personal choice; if it doesn't work for you then . . . stick with the small Sebbie.

I pop my thumb and the blade shoots out really fast! No wrist action at all. It took a while to get it like this though..

I had a Seb make it into Canada and it passed the Canadian customs no flick rule. I know forsure they looked at the knife and tried to flick it open. They did not take it away from me.

I think it's just a matter of tightening different screws to different degrees. My large classic Seb can be popped open with no wrist movement as well. Gotta love it.
(Incidentally, I'm up in Canada too, but mine was given to me as a gift. God knows where she got it.)
