Well, some of you may remember my post: Small Sebenza...Huh?

http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=326420

Well, I got to thinking, all of you cannot be wrong and I am right! As hard as I tried, I cannot give myself that much credit...

So, basically, I was unhappy with the action of the Sebbie. For all of the praise, why am I getting a sore thumb (actually losing skin).

Well, after some work, I figured out the secret ( as well a reading the posts and your responses)
1) Do not push down on the thumb stud, simply press with the side of your thumb and sweep the blade out...what a difference!

2) Be careful not to press on the opposing side (the lock bar) then opening the knife. The harder your try to open the knife, while 'pressing' on the thumbs stud (a no, no), you actually put pressure on the lock, which in turn puts pressure on the blade.

3) And, finally, you need to work the knife about 1000 times. Mine is smooooooooth!

And, I am so taken by this knife, and to try to right my wrong, I just purchased a Brand New NICA Small tanto blade. I read all of the archives on this knife in this and other forums to know that some do not get it! What is the point of a Tanto on a utility knife? Why mix Sebenza with American/Japanese style sushi wanna be knives? (Did I capture all of the negative setiment)

Well, I do not have the answer and may never. But, I LOVE THE Way it looks!!! Plus, I doubt I will see another one on someone else with only 400 made. And, for $299, cheaper than my Small Regular sebbie, brand new in box from a store, how can I go wrong? The blade steel is not SV30 (something 42), but heck, if CR likes it, so will I!

So, can I get back into the club?

I will try to add a picture...full credit should be given the the photographer as I lifted this from the Tanto that is on eBay right now. I hope that this is legal...

OK, so what's your next CRK purchase? You know what "they" say: You can't have just one! ;)

Glad to hear you finally came around. I love my large regular Sebenza. I have a small regular that I rarely carry and a large flat grind. You can't have just one Seb. I really would like to add a woodie to the collection next and maybe a Mnandi too. See what happens when you catch the bug. Enjoy your new CRK.

Well, I have no idea how to add an image...so, here is the link to the eBay listing. I HAVE NO CONNECTION TO THE SELLER! This free adverstising may make up for my past intentions to use his photo...karma!
"Free advertising" is still not allowed especially since the seller is a member of BFC. Links to ongoing eBay auctions is not something we do around here. It's what we call "auction spotting". There are numerous other places to find pics. If you need to use a pic use this one.

Hey, that's not my knife but it looks like it! :D One nice aspect of the tanto Sebenza is that whatever the point may be good for, the long cutting edge gets as sharp as the regular blade shape.

acastell, I'm glad you figured it out. Now check out the Mnandi :)

How do you like the clutter on my picture takin table? You got an awesome price on that Sebbie from a shop. Did they know what they were selling? I sold my other large tanto a week or two ago and someone got a steal on that one too. (No more lowballing for me thanks) They are great knives. Here's a better pic of the two I kept.

Oh ya. Thanks for the inadvertant ebay bump. Now all someone has to do is buy it. :D

Thanks Oilman! That is a great pic...I think the price many have had something to do with the $1000's worth of WHs I bought!

Anyway, I now have a delema. Do I carry the knife. My knife carry is rather unique. I like to carry 1 and only 1 knife. I have a score of knives, but only carried 1 for the past year or so, until the MOP scale cracked when I dropped it.

I decided the carry the sm sebbie and I like it. I replaced my WH. I still love WH, but the sebbie is the new kid on the block and I trust the strength of the knife.

Now that I have the tanto, I want to carry it. I do not care about getting it scratched, that is what the knife is for. But, I have read so many post against the utility of the Tanto. But, others have said that the Sebbie tanto has a very useful grind.

My knife duties include, RH front pocket weight, desk top paper weight, desktop decoration, letter opener, fruit and veggie (snacks) cutter, box cutter on recycle day and that is about it.

Will I really notice much of a difference between the Tanto and the drop point?

The obvious recomendatioin would be to use it for a week, then make a decision. Well, if I plan 'not' to use it, then I would rather keep it pristine.

Anyway, not sure there are enough folks that ecd the nICA tanto to help, but all feedback is appreciated.

Well, I am so happy that you came around to the Sebenza.
I'm also in the process of "breaking it in", not quite a thousand openings on mine yet, but I can't seem to keep my hands off of it.
My latest EDC fo sure!I will not be afraid of using this knife, and if it gets scratched, dinged what ever, I know I can have it refurbished.I'd probably need to get another one as back-up first, as I really don't think I want to be without one!

Congratulations.

it is also a cute knife, at least to me it does not look "tactical", although I suppose I am not a typical person so I will have to wait for gasps and screams next time I take mine out and open it to cut a box or open a package...

I think the break in period can be reduced by bending the locking bar a little to take some of the pressure off of the blade.

Considering all the care that went into the design and award-winning execution of these knives, I would suggest using the acastell approach: learn how to operate it properly, rather than modify the mechanism.

very strongly agree with that statement.

though i have never been nutz about sebs, i like larger folders myself, i must say they are all very well made/finished/fitted/executed, if ya want a knife that size, ya could do lots worse imho. my son loves mine, he gets it for his 16th b-day, not far off either. if he loses it i'll skin him lol. but of all my knives (40+) the sebs his favorite.

Excellent!

So, as I posted someplace else, I now have 2 sebbies. After reading up on the Tanto, I wil not carry this knife. I never buy with the intention to store safely in a drawer, but in this case, I will make an exception. I love the looks of the knife and will most likely end up pulling it out to use occasionally.

So, here is my recent dilema. I will carry the Sebbie every day. I bought the regular as I needed to test the knife and I wanted to keep my cost own. I am used to carrying my WH, which is a spectacular looking knife. The sebbie is, well, rather plain. That is in part why I like it so much, totally functional. But, I do want to get one that has a little character as most of the time I use the knife is in the office.

I have decided on the Pheasant tail fish hook knife. Now, I have to decide if I want to keep my regular and the fish hook as these are both in the same categorie, user! I would rather get rid of the regular and replace with a fishook.

If anyone has any ideas on this, let me know.

Also, if anyone has a pheasant and wants to trade for a regular, let me know....small only!

AC, that's a great dilemma you've got yourself :) What I always recommend is to find the money for the new knife and keep the old as well.

You can always sell the old if you decide to later on, if you find you really aren't using it, if you really need the money. But it's easier to get a second one than to replace the other when it's gone.

That is sound advice and I have to agree...

In this case, it is more of an emotional task. Often, I need to eliminate choices. If I have the regular sitting in the drawer, then I may be tempted to grab it in favor of the pheasant tail.

I am not sure if this has been done before, but I may consider lending my knife to those that want to 'test' the sebenza. I have read a number of posts about folks that are unable to 'hold' the knife as there are no local retail shops in their area and therefore look to the forumites guide them towards a purchase.

This would require some trust on my side, but I think the cummunity here can vouch for their respective members.

So, if anyone is in a situation where they find themselves unable to get their hands on a Small Sebenza and would like to use the knife for a few days, please let me know. When I get my new Pheasant in hand, I will put my 'small regular' into rotation.

If you want the action of your Sebbie even smoother try militec 1 lubricant. The blade will be much faster and just as smooth. I know there are alot of die hard flourinted grease fans but personaly I think that Militec owns the grease. :p

Am I particularly weird or are there others out there who do not much like the tanto blade?

I must admit I do like the handles on the ones in the pics above though.
