Sebenza Inlays?

Hello All,

I'm looking to add to my CRK collection and I don't have what many consider the "best" one. The large Sebenza. I have a small 21 and I LOVE it. I also have a Mnandi with snakewood inlays, which is incredibly beautiful. I recently purchased an Umnumzaan, which I love more and more every day. Definitely would be in the running for the, "If I only had one folding knife," game.

My question is this. I don't really care as much about price, because what's a few bucks more when you're spending that much money? I want to know what you think about the feel of the inlays on the large Sebbie. How is the added thickness? Better purchase? What are the pros and cons? I've also gotta ask the wood vs. micarta question. I like the look of a lot of the woods, but does the micarta provide a grippier surface?

For some reason Sebenzas are a little hard to find lately, especially if you're looking for a specific thing. The micarta handled ones seem to all be out of stock.

I'm very interested in any and all feedback and willing make up my mind and wait to find the one I really want in stock.

Thanks!

Mike

This would match your Mnandi perfect, They are made for each other..........

I held an inlay today for the first time today at BLADE at CRK booth. I LOVED IT!!!! Don't even think twice. I was going their to buy either plain large or an Umnumnzaan but held an inlay and that totally threw me off. I really miss my Umnumnzaan since I sold it and wanted another but dan that inlay has got me thinking.

I love the feel of inlays. Whether Micarta or wood, they add a substantial amount of grip versus a regular. Micarta is grippier than wood, but nothing is like the feeling of pulling out a Sebbie with some beautiful inlays when everyone's showing off knives.

The Seb below my EDC and I absolutely love it. It has Ironwood inlays. I use the G10 Endura for camping.

I have Small Sebenzas that are plain, decorated, and inlaid with Micarta and the Micarta is by far my favorite. The additional width and grip and just fantastic. To me, the Micarta just feels so much better in my hand.

I am curious how are the inlays attached to the frame?

If i where ever to get one i would be tempted to get CF twill to replace the micarta inlays that would be HAWT!!

I just received my first inlay CRK, a Large 21 with ebony. Is this thing too beautiful to use? It does feel great in the hand but the inlays and satin finished blade makes me think twice about using it. What a dilema.....

I have some nice inlays and really love the decorative aspect of it. It gives them more of a classy look imo. I also like the added thickness of the handle for the grip.
I like the Limited edition sebenzas for their annual offering and the choice of woods. No experience with the micarta at all.

I felt exactly the same way until I got the first scratch. Now, I just use it. Don't forget that CR will refurbish the handle for $27.50, anytime you want. Not bad.

Good points Dallas and zyhano, this woody is really great in the grip department and, if she does get scratched beyond my comfort zone I can always send her in for a polish.

The lack of thickness in the hand was my only turn off on the larg Sebbie.. I initially didnt like the look of the inlays, but Im starting to think I may need to look at an inlayed large again.. Im thinking micarta, due to the added grip..

Can you post a comparison pic of those two that shows their relative thicknesses?

Thank you all for your responses! Looks like the inlays are a no brainer. I love no brainers! Now the question is whether I go for the Snakewood to match my Mnandi to have a matching set. But then I'll have to get a Small Sebbie with the Snakewood to have a full house... My plain Small will feel left out. Or maybe I'll get Ebony just cause I really like the way it looks. Or maybe I'll get the Ebony and the Micarta and just use the Micarta as an EDC. I'd better get another job...

The wood inlays are too pretty. Gold thumbstud, calfskin pouch, polish finished blade, and the beautiful woods/bones are too elegant. Buy one and keep it on display. Then buy one with micarta for use.

I can only comment on the inlays on a small Seb. I don't find the added thickness a problem, and I do like both the looks as well as the improvement in grip when opening and closing the knife (fingertips in the groove between the two inlay panels). Plus, as the post above says, they're fun to look at! They also make the knife look a little less severe, especially (going on pictures in comparison to my only large, which is plain) when you're talking about the large Sebenza.

Here you go. The inlay Seb is slightly wider than the g10 Endura. Maybe 1/16".

Well, I think that solves my only gripe with it then.. Man, if they only had one on display when I was looking/fondling.. Looks like its back on the list..

I opted for the micarta inlays for my large 21 and never looked back. It looks great and serves a purporse as well. I would be way too careful if i had wood inlays on my sebbie. But the wood sure looks nice!
