Sebenza Lockbar damage, in the clear?

Howdy,

I was hoping to get an opinion of lock bar modification and its possible side effects. I have a Sebenza 25 which I love and would like to have engraved. The inspiration came after enjoying some beautiful photos of Sebenza's that have been engraved. Most were only done to the front side scale and some featured both front and back. I would like to take it a step further and have the lock bar done as well. Yet have heard that any modifications to the lock bar would screw up its preset spring tension and thus cause problems with lockup. Is this a fact and what is the possible change a small modification would have a negative effect? 75%, 95%? Has anyone had success with lock bar modification before? Thanks

Though I don't think engraving the lock bar would hurt anything, (providing you don't modify the lock face), I would definitely check with CRK to be sure. Better safe than sorry, because getting a new lock side frame replaced is probably not inexpensive.

Though, the Starbenza has the Wilson Combat engravings that carry over to the lockbar, so simple engravings appear to not pose a risk. At least there is president there.

Engraving the body of the lock bar will do nothing to the function of the lock. If you engrave the area that has the cut out it is possible you may have issues with the spring tension because of the thinning out of the spring and weakening of the area.

Ah yes, great point! For some reason the Starbenza totally eluded me. I am only guessing but do the Starbenza designs come from the CRK factory in the name of WC or does Wilson Combat do the machining themselves on the blanks? hmmm......Thank you

Good point as well. Yeah, I will definitely consider it and relate it to the guy going to be doing the engraving. My main concern was the heat and such that could be possibly generated which might pose a problem.

I wouldn't worry about heat from an engraving causing any damage, that is a non issue here. Keeping the engraving off the cut out area is a good idea although it would have to be pretty deep to cause any real problems. I have a mate that got his 21 heavily textured on both scales including the lock bar and he has carried that knife for a couple of years now with no problems that I know of. :)
