So I am thinking of getting a sebenza with micarta inlays. The thing is when I see pictures of the black canvas micartas some look dark black and others look like they are green//grey and don't look black at all. Is it just the lighting of these pictures? I really prefer the lighter look over the dark black that is the only thing holding me back from buying one. Can some one please explain to me why the knives seem like they are two different colors?

Its all moisture. Some are wiped with WD40 and such for a darker look. Palm sweat and oil will make it darker aswell.

It'll always return to that greenish color when dry.

Thanks for clearing that up for me. My wallet on the other hand hates you.

Yeah I see you just bought a micarta sebenza your self. Guess both are wallets are mad at you!

Yup, always regretted letting go of the one I had, will be glad to have another:thumbup:

Oils from ones hand or wiping it with oil on purpose will keep the colour dark, if you wash it it will go back to gray. Also the finish makes a difference if you go for a high grit finish it will be always darker and glossier looking no matter what, if you go for a rough grit like 80 it will go from dark to light as it's cleaned up or wet etc. It's all down to how much fiber is exposed, really is what I'm trying to say. :p:thumbup:

I personally like a good rough or blasted finish on my micarta handles and use it whenever possible on my hand made knives as well as knives I have modified for personal use.

I agree with all the comments about oils and how they will make the micarta look darker. The other thing I noticed is there seems to be different patterns of micarta out there. Mine has fibers that are in a straight line, while I've seen some that have fibers that are wavy. I prefer the look of wavy micarta.

That depends on where the scales are cut from on the block. The top and bottom have the crimped looking fibers you like while either end will have straight looking fibers, the flanks have the layered look that we all know from the standard micarta handles we see on many knives. There is also a difference between paper, linnen, canvas etc. I'll try and remember to take a few pics showing what I mean when I drop past the shop tomorrow. :)

Awesome! Thanks so much for the explanation. I look forward to the pics.

I think this thread needs some pics. I haven't done anything to the micarta, this is Au Natural! I like the variance in pattern. I also like the look of the darker micarta I have seen. I just haven't put any WD 40 or oil on mine. Not sure if I will either. BTW, mine is very wavy. I like it.

I like the wavy pattern as well. Nice looking insingo you have there by the way. That is exactly what I want.

Thank you for the compliment. I really enjoy this knife. I have stopped buying/coveting knives since I bought it. I get by just fine with my alox farmer, Sebenza and PM2 in my carry rotation. I guess I am looking for one more knife, I really want a BK2 to go along with my BK9.

I have a large micarta insingo as well. I have not done anything to the micarta other than use it. With other micarta knives I have, I have noticed the micarta 'ages' very well. It will darken in areas and smooth out here and there. You can return the 'original' look by scrubbing it clean, as others have stated.
I love my 'plain' sebbies also, but the micarta really gives a nice secure grip...great for working when your hands may be sweaty or wet.

Yes ur wallet will hate you for awhile, but I've noticed they forgive and forget quickly :)

Well I just solved that issue. I just bought a new saddleback wallet today so I really don't care if I get the old one mad at me now.

I have an older 09 micarta sebenza, and it has the straight lined micarta very similar to hazes pic above. Its my favorite, although the wavy pattern is nice too

Canvas micarta on the bottom there Haze?

They are both canvas, the bottom one is natural/green and the top is regular black. IMO canvas micarta is the best handle material of all time, I use it as much as I can.

I dont know if we can talk about costs, but how are those blocks/sheets priced? Im just curious as to what they cost.
