In the "Is This To Be Expected" thread there is talk about a modification done to newer sebenzas. What is the purpose of this modification?

Hi, I assume the purpose of the thinning of the grip just opposite the inside cutout of the lock bar is to make the spring action of the lockbar more easy. In the older versions this "depression /cutout was made but then on the inside where the 2 semi round cutouts where also made for the lockbar. I hope you can still follow my bad English

To tell you the truth...your "bad English" is better than that of many around here. You probably know it better than myself.

The change in the back handle of the Sebenzas is to allow more space for the cloth of a pocket under the clip. The way the clip used to be, there was not a lot of space for a thicker pocket welt .

What we have done is re-design the spring cut-out so that there is full strength under the clip and no handle strength is compromised.

The Sebenza I have was made in Oct of 1998, does it have this modification you speak of?

I'll leave Anne to give the definite answer, but from what I have read as I follow closely Sebenza developments, I would say No.
Part of Chris Reeve continual improvements.
My two don't have it either, but I see no need to worry.

Large Sebenza born 07/30/99 has old design.
Tanto Sebenza born 09/22/99 has modified design.

It seems to be a very recent development. Since I remove the clip on my knives, it is another one of those “improvements” that I could do without. I hope it is not being done on the small Sebenzas yet, I have a decorated model due soon.

Although the wood inlay Sebenzas were the first that had this modification done, it has become a regular feature on Sebenzas made from July 1999.

Anne,

I had a Large Sebenza born on Aug. 19, 1999, that did not have the back handle modification. If the modification was standard on all Sebenzas from July 1999 on, why did this one not have it?

I wish I had not sold it now, as I don't particularly care for the mod. I prefer the clip insert option, and it doesn't look as good with the new mod.

Mine's dated Jan. 27th, 1999 and it have the modification. Hmmmmm.

Here are a couple of scans of the new locking finger on a "woody" small Sebenza:

The ironwood is there to prop up the knife at a slight angle on the scanner. The new locking finger is machined lenghwise on the inside, with material removed from both the locking finger and the handle slab area on the other side of the cut. The older style had two cut-outs across the locking finger.

For what it's worth, here's a scan of the inside of a Benchmade 750 handle (a factory reject that I obtained for etching practice - still working on getting the right touch). I haven't had the guts to take apart a Sebenza yet, even though CRK encourages us to do that by sending us the correct hex key.

The Benchmade locking finger has a lengthwise groove down the middle, with full thickness on both sides of the cut. The new Sebenza groove is wider, extending in beyond the locking finger, and has a rounded border.

Comparative strenth of the three designs? I haven't tried fixing the handle to the immovable object and smacking the spine of the blade with the irresistable force. Bare-handed, I doubt if it makes any difference.

Mine has cutouts on the inside of the handle(two of them)and one on the outside(one length wise)under the clip.
I can't see that in the picture on the one on the left.Does the large Sebenza have differant cutouts?
Mine was born October 20th 1999.Any comments?

Scott, I hate to say this, but your Sebenza is in need to "special handling" and you need to carefully wrap the Sebbie and send it to me. I will place is secure storage for the next millennium.
