i would like to treat myself to a really nice folder. one i will use, but take care of. the sebenza's and strider's are about the same price. any recommendations as to how they compare or significant differences ? is the only difference between classic and regular sebenza in the handle ? any preferences among strider AR vs. SMF vs. SnG ? the custom striders are more expensive. is the difference strictly decorative ?
thanks for the help. this site is addictive (as is my knife buying)

I have a Large Reg Seb and SMF, they are both great knives, you can't go wrong with either

I would buy the Sebenza, I own one of each and the Sebenza is easy to clean, very solid (unlike the strider) and $100 cheeper than the mick burger *cough i meen strider junk.

The custom striders are all looks unless you get a custom RCC because the customs that ive seen are frame locking insted of liner locking like the standard model, but cost around a grand!!@@@@!!!   :thumbdn: :grumpy:

I own none of these knives. However, the two choices you laid out are very different. The Sebenza will be much better at cutting than Striders because Striders have such a thick edge geometry (which also makes them stronger). They have been likened to sharpened prybars which can take abuse. I would read more and find out what you are looking for in a knife, you can also look for others opinions, etc. and then buy one that is close to your description.

Don't own any striders (I have handled a few). Just got my first sebenza and couldn't be happier. I would say go with the sebenza.

If it matters, if I had to make a choice between a Sebenza and a Strider, I would definately go for the Sebenza.

I own about a dozen Sebenzas and a wide selection of Strider's.

I have carried them all and used them.

The Sebenza actually has a very thick edge. I was SHOCKED when I took some calipers to actually measure how thick they are. The hollow grind and pretty lines of the knife make it seem more refined and delicate than it is.

I like the Sebenzas well enough. Down sides are in my opinion they do not harden the S30V enough. While good they do not seem to stay sharp as long as my SMFs for instance. The Sebenza is a very nice looking and wonderfully consistent knife.

Which brings me to the SMF. The flat ground blade is no thicker at the edge than a Sebenza and Like the Sebenza can benefit from some thinning. I find once this is done the Strider with its flat grind out cuts the Sebenza.

Here is a picture of two SMF blades one with the factory edge and one I thinned and convexed.

I generally carry a SMF. For me its the perfect folder. Sized just right. Rides deep in the pocket. Very secure in the hand. Great Lock up. I am pretty sure the Strider specification for the heat treatment of the S30V is better. The blades sharpen and polish really well and seem to hold the edge longer.
I do have a military back ground and much of what I think about knives and weapons in general have been influenced by that experiance. I like the way Striders look.

Be your own man here and make up your own mind after holding them and checking them out. Its popular and trendy to bad mouth Strider right now on this Forum. Take all that with a grain of salt. Most people on this Forum don't even use their knives.

You can't go wrong with either knife! BUY WHAT YOU WANT!!

unneeded and grumpy sounding... EDIT

I would look at an Hinderer XM-18 and just wait. Its a lot of cheese, might as make it worth your while and get a custom.

Listen lets try to be careful about spouting opinion dressed up as fact. This does not help the original poster make a informed choice. I am not even sure what your post actually means.

STEVENKIM has a good idea and in reality is not that much more than an SMF, I own both and like the sebbie more for edc. I carry my strider on camping trips with me cuz I already have it uglied up and it grips better when I wear gloves. I am in line for my XM-18, if you got the time, look at one of those.

then your stupid. He asked wether the customs were worth it I said no, only some of the RCC customs are acutally different from the regular models.

If you cant read then go somewhere else than a forum.

Sorry your use of language was so awkward I missed your point.

Well let me see how to put this. Your wrong how about that? Clear enough?

The customs all get their blade grind in house by hand. The blade grind on the productions as far as I know are outsourced. There are other differences as well.

I hope to finish this pleasant conversation before your Mom makes you go to bed. Thanks for your insights, silly as they are it still took effort.;)

Ultimately, I agree with Justabuyer when he said buy what you want. You do not have to rush into a decision, you might want to research it a little more. Realize with this price range you can start to buy customs. You do not have to get a custom though, if you want to get a Sebenza or whatever that is great. Just make sure it is something that YOU want (and can afford of course).

Exactly right

I have both. Prefer the Sebenzas though. Both my SnG's developed bladeplay within the first month of ownership under very light use. I've read that its just a tightening pivot issue though for some.

Some people say the Sebenza will outcut the Striders. Not so sure about that since the SnG's are flat ground they slice pretty well in my experience.

Some people say that Striders are tougher. Not so sure about this one either. They look tougher but because my Sebenza is fitted so much better I feel like my Seb is a tougher knife.

I like both but if I had to choose one it would be CRK...
