Sebenza ordering questions...

Hi guys,

I originally came to bladeforums way back when looking for a special knife for my brother, an heirloom quality knife to give to him that can be passed down, a user, etc. Only to be pre-empted by his purchase of 2 knife kits. That are basically junk.

The value to me is the lifetime of use that someoen can get out of a high quality knife and pass it on for a new lifetime.

Well, I think I've decided on getting a pair of sebenza's for me and my brother. Can you give me any tips with regard to this being done. I know I'll need to contact CRK directly but looking on preliminary info, turn around time. special requests, etc.

I think I'd like to get matching knives made. We both like dogs very much and have seen the paw prints version. There was a Sun handled one I quite liked. Possibly damascus. I saw a knife in onlyfineknives.com (?) that had mastodon inlays and asteroid bolsters which tickled my scientific fancy.

The sebenzas looked like simple(few parts), very high quality knives made by someone that seems to care about that. If you were in my place would you do the same or look at another maker? Any ideas on what you would order?

I know its a lot to ask so help me out where you can.

I'd say get two classic inlays, large or small as you desire. Check the different woods and see which one you prefer. I like the Micarta inlays for everyday use but for something special I would go for the wood or maybe if your budget allows, mammoth ivory. With pocket use the woods and the ivory age beautifully, developing an almost antique patina. The dog paw ones are exclusive to Plaza Cutlery in Costa Mesa and getting matching ones would be no problem. IMO heirloom knives would be the classic wood inlays.

Like Subaru says the LE's are great but the wait is long. The classics are less expensive and more readily available. I guess you have a lot to consider.

Started carrying my large micarta as an EDC, my small micarta has been a dress knife for almost a year coming up. Looking at getting a large desert ironwood for dress carry. Take a look at CRK's site, lots of different materials.

Oh yeah, didn't know I needed a Native American graphic Seb until I saw one for sale on another forum. These really are like crack.

I would second the idea of an inlaid Sebenza (either wood or ivory). They are just more special and precious-especially for your purpose.

Oh, and by the way-I`ve just heard from Heather at CRK, that damascus blades are backordered for at least 9-12 months. Just for your information..... .

Thanks for all the advice. I agree the inlaid is probably the way to go. I especially like the birds eye maple or Mammoth Ivory (non-bark). I haven't mentioned this to my brother yet.

I was wondering about engraving, such as the titanium back of the framelock. I suppose that could be done outside the factory.

I have inquired before about this and was told they don't do it. You can check again to be sure. Seems like that would be pretty easy to get done aftermarket though.

The annual Limited Edition ones would be the more 'special' in terms of less common. They are sold out for 2007 (all the Large Inlay that is) but I would think you could get 2 still for 2008. The Ivory Inlay ones are sweet, IMO. And damascus has been way back-ordered for a while. But the Ivory inlay with Damascus blade is really hottt if you have time to wait.
