Sebenza Orientation in Horizontal Leather Sheath

I've got a new large Sebenza 21 micarta with pocket clip, and am about to order a custom leather sheath for horizontal carry, on my strong side, strapped between 3 and 6 o'clock (assuming my buckle is 12 o'clock), with flap and press snap.

Although new to sheaths, my preferred orientation is with pommel in the sheath, and the clip facing my belt/body. Or put another way, tip down/in and blade up. My objective is a quick, solid (no dropping) draw. I don't and won't use a lanyard.

I understand that the clip may cause a problem with catching while drawing with this orientation, but the experienced leather worker said it could be done. I was wondering if anyone ever done this? If so, how did it work? Did the clip prevent a smooth draw?

For people with the modern CRK leather sheaths, does this orientation work with those?

If I were going to carry a small or large Sebenza in a leather sheath, I'd remove the clip. I've carried that way before and the clip has done nothing but get in the way. I also carry with the pivot up at the open end of the sheath. That's the fastest and cleanest draw that I've ever found, vertical or horizontal. Remove the lanyard and clip and you get a much smoother knife for deployment and putaway.

The CRK leather sheaths don't work well in horizontal carry for me. My belts are all too wide and thick to fit in the loop. They work fine vertically, though.

Dalefuller, you are 100% correct and obviously speak from experience.

FolderFreaker, it is true, an experienced leather worker can make a sheath to accomodate the clip, but it very likely will prove impractical to you in actual use.
Also be aware that a snap flap sheath, when worn horizontally, is subject to accidental opening if working in thick brush of similar conditions unless that snap is of the "one way opening" or "Lift the Dot" type.
The ideas sound good in theory, and if that's what you like then do it, but be aware of any potential problems with the choice.
Often times one just has to try things for one's self and decide what works best from there.

Best of Luck to you!

Thanks for the responses guys.

dalefuller, thanks for sharing your experience and good sense. Tip down and clipless would be ideal, although I mainly carry inside waste band (IWB), and taking the clip on and off doesn't appeal - I know I'll eventually loose something or strip some threads. Maybe I need a second one ;)

Desert Hermit, I did suspect that pommel down wouldn't work with a clip, as the clip is designed to catch. I feel better about spending my hard earned on something that is going to work well, so will go with tip up. Top tip with the snap recommendations, Lift The Dot looks just the ticket! Extra security for my beautiful new EDC sure does appeal. Thanks mate.

I think your idea of a second Sebenza 21 for IWB carry is actually a very good one.
One clipped and one clipless should work very well. Options are always a good thing.

The "Lift the Dot" snaps really are much more secure than the regular snaps, if you can get them.
Especially for horiozontal sheath carry.
