I have a question for the CRK guys on this forum.

I just traded for a 21 sebenza large cocobolo inlay 2013 model it has been carried and there are a few marks on the handle and clip. I know the clip.can be blasted out but is it possible for CRK to polish the scales again or is that an aftermarket job or will they change the scales to another material? I would have to pay for that of course i plan on using and edcing this one but wanted to know for down the line what can be done if any options i have read that they wont polish the inlayed ones except for blasting the micarta onces again. Thanks guys.

My understanding is that CRK will not polish an inlay knife. They will blast the Micarta inlay knives. I don't believe CRK will swap out inlays - only replace if warranty work. Someone correct me if I am wrong, especially the inlay replacement comments.

Thanks for the reply vaporstang. So what happens to all the people with the wood inlays and polished flats? They just leave it as is and beat on it forever? This is my first wood inlay and im just getting back after selling my last sebenza years ago. I went around and tried every production brand and some customs and realized the big heavy folders dont cut worth a damn and carry like i have a brick in my pocket and i got sick and tired of it all. They say you always come back and I know why now. Nothing was as smooth and fit my pocket so well. I was just worried about scratching them up but after coming from straight beating the "tacticool" folders I realized i wanted something perfect again. I want to beat on this used one I got but I was checking if there were other options in case it gets beat on a little

I think most people that use the wood inlayed knives, me included, don't worry about the character marks that come with usage too much. If I was that worried about it, I would probably contact someone like Barry H to see what he could to with R&R of the inlays, and if needed, replace the inlays with something else.

Mentioned Barry H as I vaguely remember seeing some work in this area that looked really nice..but there are many of the custom scale makers that look to do great work.

Thanks BarryH I will definitely take a look at um.. Mr.Barry H's work will be in touch shortly when i get her in. Didnt think changing the inlays was an option, but that would totally be cool if it doesnt void a warranty or anything or I guess it wouldnt matter at that point because it would be customized to what I want

I heard my name mentioned. How about posting a couple of pictures of the offending marks?

Ahhh...Ears were burnin' :)

Good timing..I was pretty sure that was you that did the inlays with carbon fiber..Correct?

It might be worth contacting the CRK spa to ask if they can refinish/repolish inlay slabs knowing that replacing inlays is an option. I don't recall that question ever being asked before. They typically won't refinish handle slabs with inlays (wood or stones), but that assumes that the owners would want to preserve the inlays and keep the pricing down to reasonable levels.

I have seen one instance where CRK replaced the inlay on an Annual edition with Mammoth bark (a 2003 I think), so they can do an inlay replacement if they choose. Ask away, my friend, but be prepared to pay!

A few years back, I seem to remember some cf inlay work:)

For a variety of reasons, I'm not taking much new work these days. However, I could certainly be willing to give my opinion on whether or not some gouged/scratched inlays could be sanded out or not. Gotta see a pic, though:cool:

It is not messed up enough to post a pic of, I was just asking around if there was a way to clean it up a little if it did, but upon searching it seems the inlays save most of the scales from damage and the snail trails and gouges happen on the outer edges. Thanks for the replies guys i think i have my answer. Seems most owners just scotchbrite the edges and snail trails out

The maroon colored scotchbrite is fairly aggressive, followed by green, then gray. There are finer grit scotchbrite available too. I think your plan of attack is a good one, as removing the inlay is somewhat tricky.

This is kind of related so I thought it would be better here than a new thread. Will CRK refurb the scales with graphics (Unique or Computer Generated)? I ask because I like the Damascus models with the matching CGG pattern on the slab but I wasn't sure if they could take care of scuffs and snail trails at the spa on those models.

I believe all their wood inlays are stabilized wood so you should be able to sand out any minor marks and then use finer grades of abrasive until you have the finish you want (matte, eggshell or polished) - just mask off the titanium first.
