After how many normal (ie. 40 degree) sharpenings do you need to back bevel a S30V sebenza blade please?

My understanding was that after reated sharpenings at the normal eg 40 degree angle you get a thickening of the edge as it progresses imperceptibly up the grind.

You use a snmaller angle ie the 30 degree back bevel position on a sharpmaker to thin the edge again before sharpening at 40 degrees again.

I am still trying to get rid of the little chips on the curved front part of my sebenza blade and spent about 30 minutes yesterday sharpening and they are now nearly gone. For the first time I have managed to get really shaving sharp on a blade and I am really pleased (sad but true)

Bagman,
I use the 30 degree set up of my sharpmaker on every third sharpening. I have never had a problem. I also use it if I really use the heck out of the blade and put some serious wear on it.

Hope this helps.
Jason

Thanks Jason

Do you just use stage 1 at 30 degrees and then sharpen as normal at 40?

I'm not sure what stage 1 is, but I sharpen using the flats of the sticks as opposed to the corners. I use the coarse sticks in the 30 degree slots. Then I used the fine ones in the 30 degree slots. I will then repeat this (coarse then fine) in the 40 degree slots.
My Sebbies are all Hair popping sharp.

Hope this helps,
Jason

I use only the flats too, at least on short blades. Its TOO easy to round off the tip using the corners. I will use the corners on longer kitchen knives, but thats about it, plus I still make sure to stop about 1/2 " before the tip.

But I finish I finish my knives up on a leather hone, that puts a nice polished surgical type edge on it.

I have had real problems rounding off the points in the past with my sharpmaker and am trying really hard not to do it with my sebbie

This is not as true on convex profile blades as it is for sabre or flat ground blades.

Also, you're going to find that back-bevelling S30V with a Sharpmaker will take about 200 years. Even with the coarsest stone on my Edge Pro, after 500 swipes I *still* hadn't reach the edge.

If you get to the point where edge profile is becoming a problem, my recommendation is to send the knife back to Chris and have him restore the edge for you. It will be faster and easier that way.

I was worried about how long it would take me with my sharpmaker.

I do have a gatco set up and some diamond hones for it and have reprofiled a 420v blade with that but it took forever even then.

I am thinking of getting the diamond rods for the sharpmaker but the price seems a little steep?

JohnW,
What do you think of your Edgepro? how does it compare to other sharpeners?

Thanks,

Jason

My understanding from reading the 204 instruction manual, you don't back bevel with the 30 degree setting all the way to the edge. You only want to take some of the "shoulders" off the bevel so the 40 degree stones can reach the edge quicker. You aren't trying to reprofile the bevel to 30 degrees all together.
