I bought my first sebenza. I got the 2005 LE w/a tanto blade instead of the regular large sebenza. This was my first knife w/a tanto blade i normally carry a emerson mini-comander that has a large belly. I would like to know if i should return the LE and get the regular sebenza. I would like to know if anyone is carrying the sebenza tanto as a edc how it well it has performed for them? I use my knife to cut hoses and rags, trim plastic, cut open boxes etc. Also which sharping system works best for sebenzas?

Can't help you with sharpening systems as I just got my Seb Classic. But as far as tanto vs regular blade-from your description of what you use your knife for, the tanto should suit your needs just perfectly. The tanto blade is designed primarily for piercing pretty thick stuff (like heavy leather armor) It is a Japanese creation from waaaaay back in the Samurai days (or before). The tanto most American knives have is what is called, I believe, an American Tanto. A bit different angle than the original Japanese model. I think you did OK with your choice of the LE. Enjoy!!

thanks for the reply Richard. Today was the sebenza's (aka LUCY) first day at work, and i must say that she has performed well and have decided to keep her on permanent.

I'm a huge fan of the newer designed tanto Seb. I carry mine quite often to work or in the field. A very solid performer, tip strength is just incredible. I've been using a Smith's diamond sharpener with great results on all of my Sebenza's.

I use the Spyderco Sharpmaker and If I am not mistaken it says to use that right on Chris Reeves web site.. It works wonders and pretty easy to use.

The tanto sounds like a great edc. The Sharpmaker keeps my Sebbies razor sharp.
ENJOY!!!

I carry mine daily. It even has scratches on it's blade! Some folks would faint at that news!

Its whatever floats your boat. I don't much care for a tanto for EDC, as a drop point profile or something similar is easier (for me) to use when opening boxes and letters, stuff like that, because you can get that pointy tip in there. I'd pick a tanto if my job entailed making holes in 55 gallon drums or car hoods. :)

That's great! It's also really nice that you can carry a longer-than-three-inch blade at work too!!
I've been curious how a tanto blade would work out as an EDC - let us know how it is in the long run too.

I tend to grab my tanto Sebenza rather than the regular for EDC. Not that the regular tip is delicate, but I don't worry at all about that tanto tip. If you needed it for fine, close-up work, a pointier style might be better, but I find the tanto is even good in the kitchen.

The tanto and a Mnandi make a good set, since each is so different, they complement each other.
