Can anyone tell me about the different thumbrest styles on Sebenzas?

I own three large Classics, and only one of them sports the style that can be seen on the left of my photo. The other two sport the "fine-ridge" (hopefully that term makes sense) style.

Is the "wide-ridge" style older? And if so, when did they change over to the other version.

I`m just curious as two of my Sebenzas were made in 2004, and one has the "wide-ridge" style, the other the "fine-ridge" style-so I was wondering what the deal is... .

All mine have the fine-ridge. They range in age from 1998 to 2007. All regular style, large and small.

I think they tried the wide ridge but for some reason it didn't work out. I have a small LE with the wide ridges. I don't think they made very many of them and I'm not sure why.

The some reason was they don't work.

In 2004 they came out with the wide ones, I dislike the wide ridges. Might have been just the LE's. I have two LE's from 2004 and they both have wide ridges.

Thanks for the responses!

I actually quite like the look of the wide ridges. In my case, they are on an inlayed model... .

I too kinda liked the wide ridges. I think the majority opinion was with Dave but there may have been a machining problem too. Being relatively rare they may have additional collector value.;)

Ummm, if thats the case, would anyone be interested in a large Classic with cream ivory inlays? It sports the wide ridge style thumbrest, and Im only asking for $2k...! ;) :p Just kidding! :D

If they are really that rare, you may just have a point though. However, I wish it was available as an option still. The wide ridges have a slightly more agressive look to them-which has really grown on me. I think I even prefer it to the finer ridges... .

agressive look

Have you actually tried the side by side with the finner ridges? In my two examples they provide way less security, that is easier to slide against. Makes a seb look more like a STrider. :barf:

No, I haven`t actually tried it out, as this example is my spare/shelf queen.
I can see how it would be more "slippery" though....... .

Both are from 2004 and both are wood inlaid. The large has the small ridges, the small has the large...

I think the wider ones are OK... The finer ones do grip a little better, but I think the wider ones work (visually at least) on that particular knife. I don't mind them for "feel" either.
Here's a picture of the small, I've also not seen another (although there are probably thousands!) with the "jigged" Madagascar rosewood... thoughts?

I figured there were more!
I like it because it gives a little more feeling of "grip". I doubt there is actually much difference, but it's got a nice feel to it.
I like it with the wider ridges too! :p
I'll try to get some better pics (just to cause more heartache!):D
Actually I've almost traded it about 3 times, but could never pull the trigger... maybe I should keep it.

Showing Thumbrests (i.e. the actual thread topic...) ;)
In this case, I think it suits the knife... Dave?

You should definately keep the Jigged Rosewood! ;) It`s a rare (?) inlay, and it also sports the wide ridges-which seems to make it slightly more rare even. ;)

Personally I think the look of the jigged wood is cool-kind of reminds we of aged/weathered wood. The drawback is, that you can`t really make out the wood pattern anymore, as the rosewood is a pretty dark color. :)

The wide thumb ridges really make that particular knife look really good

nice and grippy looking!
