I'm new to the forum and this is my 1st post. I have been reading this forum for awhile and it always has the best discussions. I have progressed with my collection over the years and will be buying my 1st Sebenza shortly. I read somewhere and saw photos of a Sebenza that had the titanium handles scuffed down with scotch brite and it looked great. Has anyone done this and if so what color/grade of scotch brite did you use. Thanks

Hello there, friend, and welcome to the Forum. You may have been talking about the pix of these two that I posted recently:

Here are the original old threads discussing the work I did on them (you need to read the entirety of the threads to get the whole story, and some other members have bonus input in the second thread below)):

Good luck, and have fun!

The handles on the Sebenzas are not treated or coated. They scratch very readily. If you send the handles to Maprik or some other anodizor, the resultant finish will be much more resistant to abrasion.

thanks for the links and pics those look great. now only if I can choose between the large or small 21. My dealer just became a CRK dealer and the order he placed at the Shot Show just came in. When I hold the large I want it. When I hold the small I want it. Guess you know what I have to do.

There's a CRK dealer in RI now? I'm from Smthfield but living in PA for graduate school, I totally need to check it out next time I'm home if so!

I cannot hold onto a small. The Small is actually LESS THAN 4 inches long when closed. Gosh, the Spyderco Sage series, their Caly series, etc. are all about 4.2" or 4.3" and provide "me" with a full-sized grip. Lots of folks LOVE the small; I cannot use one. When I go to close the blade and must slide my hand back a bit to get onto the lock-blade, it basically falls out of my hand. I love Sebbies and have owned Many small and Large models...but I only carry a Large.
I use the large or the Umnumzaan...basically the same size as a large Sebbie.
Anodizing looks good, and Maprik is very good, but be careful about "sanding" your scales. IF YOU ROUND off the edges, then Chris Reeve will no longer tune up or work on your knife. The warranty is gone if you round the edges. So perhaps call 'em in Idaho, and talk to the girls that answer (two wonderful ladies) and see what they say...before you do anything.

Misanthropia you are in luck he is in Smithfield. Not listed on the Chris Reeve dealer locator but he is in contact with them about it. Should be there soon. When you get back to RI I will take you to meet him.

Yep - you have to do this:

Haha - Welcome to the addiction!!

I have re-finished three Sebs this way, and I have never had even a slight problem (keep in mind that I only re-finish the outside of the scales - never the inside). And I have never needed the warranty either on any of the 14 Chris Reeve knives I have owned over the years. So, it's all good here!

I tried the scotchbrite finish and did not like it. I took mine apart, into the blast cabinet with some 80 grit glass beads and done. Smooth finish, doesn't show wear like the original.
I tape up the detent ball, but other than that I blast the entire surface. I did this to my Micarta model, and it did not damage the micarta at all.

I was one of those guys that admired Sebenza's and knew they were a quality tool. But being unable to handle one, it's tough to shell out the money to purchase one online. After you hold one, you get it. I am saving right now and should be getting one later this week or next but I'm already trying to figure out what I can sell to get the next one. I go to my dealer during the week just to fondle it. It is that good and I think that once you get addicted to knives you naturally make the progression to better and better knives. Price is always subjective but just like any other tool buy the best you can afford you will never regret it. How many of your good saws, routers, etc. do you carry and use every day?
