Sebenza vs SERE 2000

Have/had both and LOVE the SERE. I think the SERE is one of the most underrated knives produced in the past year. It is a heavy duty knife that got rave reveiws in Tactical Knives Magazine from a real life user. The price can't be beat for what you get. A superior steel in VG-10, good G-10 panels, thick steel liners, and one of the best clips around. All in all, a hard package to beat!

Now to answer the question. I think the Sebenza is the better heavy duty cutter. BG-42, titanium frame, and an integral lock come close to unbeatable.

Remember......just one man's opinion.

The Sebenza lock has no 'history' of failing. I would go with the Sebi!

Perhaps the sere is fixed now?

Some of the SERE's won't pass the spine whack test...not all, just some. Mine didn't, it was sold. That is a danger I don't need when I have 30+ folders that DO pass the spine whack. I used to think this was a ridiculous test. No more. Now I understand. Think about it.

The SERE has a lot of sharp edges (aside from the blade) that would have "required" me to break/soften them. Then the knife is mine and is hard to sell later if desired. I.e., it needed to be customized by me.

Also, the thumb stud is poorly designed on the SERE (very sharp and annoying).

The SERE has a lot of potential. It needs a redesign. I'll take another look if they produce a redesigned "SERE 2002" or whatever.

The Sebenza is beyond reproach if you don't mind the all-titanium handles (they are a bit "cold", both to the touch and aesthetically, but are smooth and comfortable and functional...wood helps but is very expensive adder).

Use the search engine on the SERE...you'll find plenty of good and bad reported.

The Sebenza searches will probably yield few negatives other than the "gray turd" comments.

Think of the Sebenza as a very high quality utility knife. Think of the S2K as a very good tactical folder. I own both of them personally (small Sebenza and Umfaan in my case.)

The charm of the S2k for me is the perfect balance that allows you to flip the blade open instantly just by working the thumb stud (no wrist action required.) Despite the fact that it's heavier (by quite a lot) than any Reeve folder, I wouldn't view the S2K as a heavy duty utility knife. I'd view it as a tactical of the sort one might carry as a defensive weapon.

The Sebenza, on the other hand, is a world class heavy duty cutting utility knife that just begs to be used that way. Like someone said above-BG42 steel, a lock that won't fail or wear out and first class construction and quality throughout.

On the other hand, the Sebenza is somewhere around twice the price of the S2K, so there is that to consider as well. Take care.

King Grinch -- I would pay a lot of attention to ArtSig. He apparently had a very good experience with the SERE 2000. And, as he pointed out, Jeff Randall wrote a strong endorsement of the knife. If you got one as good as Jeff's, it probably would last a lifetime, if cared for somewhat. But, certainly some have been unable to pass the spine whack test.

Given that, I think that unless there are no more problems being reported with the Al Mar, that it might be a good idea to check out the knife before buying, or be certain that you have the right to return it until you get a good one. Some forumites are selling their S2Ks that flunk the test to other forumites, apparently figuring that the fingers of others are not so valuable as their own.
