The Al Mar SERE 2000.
I've been looking at getting a bigger folder, well made, heavy, for general purpose use for the past few months or so.
I have 2 small sebbies, and thought of getting the large, but I handled a SERE 2000 today, and I fell into lust with it !!
What are the pro/cons ? Which should I get, money is no object, although I can't spend much more than the list price for the large sebbie, $ 450.00 or so. Any thoughts ?? Stinky

that I saw had VG-10 steel, with a "black" nitrade coating, looked like any other black coated blade. Stinky

I have handled the SERE before and I own a small Sebenza. The Sebenza does probably have a stronger lock, but it is not likley that either one would fail under even the hardest cutting chore.

Buy the one you like best.:)

Been carrying a SERE for over a year to work with me, no problems with it at all, still locks up perfect, carries well, it's a great knife, one of my top EDC's

I am a large Sebenza fan myself, particularly the Classic's and preferabley with an inlay. The Sebenza at 3.6" in S30V steel and the integral lock is one of, if not the strongest folders around. It is the only folder I own that says "fixed blade" when open!:) You will never go wrong by buying the Sebenza, especially if cost is not a factor.

I have owned the Al Mar SERE 2000. I no longer have one but hope to fix that fairly soon. This is a very good knife. The liners are very thick and sprung just right for solid lockup. The VG10 steel is a premium steel that more and more companies seem to be going too on there top line models. The fit and finish on the SERE literally screams custom. The black scales have just the right amount of checkering for a great grip without being bit by them. Spearpoint blade is great for all around use. This knife has one of the smoothest actions around and is just plain built for tough hard work! I don't see how you can go wrong with the SERE.

So to the original question of which to buy? It's obvious. BOTH!!
If you are alloting $450.00, then you can pick up a new large Sebenza for $345.00 and have $105.00 left over for the Sere. So you can have your cake and eat it too!!  ;) :D

artsig1 has nailed it IMHO! I own both of the knives in question and wouldn't really want to have to choose between them. I lov'em BOTH!!!

I also own both the large Sebbie and the SERE 2000. Both are outstanding knives. For the money, the SERE has to be one of the best bargains in knifedom. All said and done, if my life depended on it, I'd go with the Sebbie.

If you have $450 to spend, why not go custom? Then, YOU choose blade and handle material, lock type, edge grind, specs like stock thickness, blade length and OAL, etc. It will be YOUR knife, suited to YOUR needs & wants-

Take a look at the Strider AR folder.....with a 4" blade, it's a little bigger than the large Sebenza, and stout as can be.

Try the Neil Blackwood Curr folder. It just looks awesome. I do not have one but the pictures look unbelievable. Not sure about price though. I am sure that there are forumites that know this first hand.

The Al Mar SERE 2000 is my next purchase!!! Jeff Randall tested it in the South American Jungles!!!! Read his review and weep. This has now become his benchmark for a survival folder, and his personal choice.
