I know that the small washer goes on the lock bar side and the large washer on the non-lock bar side. Does it matter which side of the washer is against the blade vs the scale? Are both sides of the washers the same, as they appear to be?

It does not make any difference. Refer to the CRK videos by Tim Reeve on YouTube about maintaining your knife: How to Clean Your Sebenza.

Thank you. I actually watched that video and noticed that he didn't seem to pay attention to it. There are other videos posted by different individuals, and for some reason they make a point to remind you to pay attention to which side of the washer contacts the blade and which the scales. Was wondering if there was a reason some folks are paying attention to this.

Yes they do, the slab side are put on dry. That keeps them from moving. Grease is put on the blade side. If you keep track of which side is against the slab, you’ll have wear against the blade only and with time, the knife will become smoother.
With the older solid washers it makes a difference. It’s more of a habit with the newer washers. On the older washers you can see the wear pattern on the blade side. Really don’t know if the newer washers with the grease pockets make a big difference if you don’t pay attention to which side is on the slab side. For me, it’s more of a habit since I’ve got some with the solid washers.

This ^^! Ok, it might all be in my imagination, but there have been times when I’ve reassembled my knife after cleaning, then disassembled again to flip the washers over. On at least one of my Sebenzas, it feels smoother when the washers are placed with a certain side facing the blade. As Ajack60 Ajack60 said, the wear on the blade side of the washer might make a difference over time, even though the difference in feel may be small. I don’t think the functionality is affected at all, though.
