Sebenza with plastic washer?

My new small sebenza I took in trade arrived today, and it has a plastic washer on one side. I always thought they were supposed to be phosphor bronze. When did this change?

never heard anything about plastic, maybe you got a homemade replacement to an original bronze washer

No change has been or will be made. The washer must have been installed by the person you bought the knife from. Are you sure it's plastic? It's hard to believe that an off the shelf washer would fit in a Sebenza due to the incredible tolerances the knife it built to. Did the knife actually open and close smoothly? The usual appropriate thing to do is contact CRK. Have them send you out a new set of washers. I'm sure that they would charge little or nothing for this. Good luck. :) ;) :p

I just disassembled the knife and yes it's a plastic washer. It opens fine but is sloppy and the blade isn't centered. This knife was described as like new in the box, not as incomplete with substandard parts substituted. Needless to say I'm angry.

Consider sending it back to CRK and they will probably fit new washers on. I wouldn't necessarily mess with this myself as the knife does have very tight tolerances and I think when they return it, it will be as good or better than new.

I just called CRK and asked them if they could send me a new washer. The lady I spoke to was rather surprised when I told her my new sebenza had a plastic washer. :) That was funny. They will send one out and I'm gonna put it in and see what happens. She advised me to send it in if that doesn't do it. So, wish me luck.

Where you buy it at?

What probably ahppened is someone bought one and said "I'll improves it by using teflon coated nylon washers!", hosed it up, then decided to get rid of it.

I traded a Randall for it, it was another user here. I've emailed them about it, I'm dying to hear the explanation of how the plastic washer got in there.

chris reeve knives has top notch qc , so i doubt it went out their door with a plastic washer. The qc guys would have picked up on the blade play and never would have let it leave. But thats just my opinion, let us know what happens.

There's no way in hell that knife came out of the Reeve factory with a plastic/teflon washer. Your knife was modded somehow for the previous owner. If you purchased that knife, here, at BladeForums, you would do all of us a favor by telling us who it was so we can avoid doing business that kind of individual

Agree 100%.

Id love to see a pic of this washer..... i bet someone bought this knife took it apart, lost the washer, and then returned it...and then it got resold as nib.

I'll post a picture when I get home. I contacted the guy I got it from, he tells me it's never been apart. It was also missing the lanyard, so I'm inclined to believe something fishy is goin on. It seems fine otherwise so I'll keep it.

Is the man you bought it from the only owner or did he buy it used? If he's saying that the knife has never been apart it kinda leads you to beleve that he was the only one who owned it. If the blade is not centered that would be hard to not notice. I think this guy knew what was going on and tried to pass it off. I mean you can look a closed sebbie and clearly see the bronze washers, especialy the bigger one. If he is saying that it came from the factory like that he's feeding you a line of ****. There is no way something like that would come from CRK with the kind of QC they are known for.

I had a large ats34 P model a few years back that had the grey nylatron washers,
If I recall correctly they were factory.

I was gonna post a pic but there's really nothing to see, just a nylon washer that's a bit too thick and has an irregular hole in the middle. It's white and a lot bigger than the other bronze washer.

Yeah you beat me to it Dave. I believe several of the early Sebenzas came with Nylatron washers or something similar. I don't know when they switched because I have a large Sebenza "P" model without a serial number and it has the bronze alloy washers.
