I see a lot of these for sale/trade here at Bladeforums.

How is the quality of this knife? Is it worth the money? Is it a good all-around knife, and does it also make a good hunting knife for big game?

How is BG42 steel? I am not familiar with it? What would it compare closely to--D2, ATS-34 etc?

Is the thumb stud reversible for us lefties?

Is the clip tip up or tip down carry?

thanks for your help

Matt

In a nutshell:

Very high quality.

Definitely worth the cash IMHO (I have a large plain, a large fully dressed 2000 wood inlay on order and am currently eyeing a small decorated and/or small wood inlay for next year. WHEW!)

Great all around knife and makes a great skinning knife with lots of belly. Easily cleaned with a water rinse or you can easily take it apart for a thorough cleaning (a satisfying rite of passage, BTW

Great steel that cuts and slices like no tomorrow. Stone washed blade shrugs off abuse and keeps looking great.

A major advance over any of my ATS-34 blades.

Thumb stud is pressed in so it is not reversible. Dual thumbs are an option but lefty models are available.

Tip up carry. Clip is removable with an insert available to cover the hole. Many remove the clip and carry in a sheath. CRK carries sheaths, but a number of Forumites also make very good ones. Gary Graley immediately comes to mind.

In any case, you can't go wrong for trying one. The CRK customer service is great and they will refurbish the knife for a small price which will essentially bring it back to new. Pretty much a lifetime knife. If you find you want to get rid of it, depreciation is pretty small compared to most purchases. Hope this helps.

If you can get one, do! You won't be sorry. Trust me, and I'm not from Los Angeles

I would have to agree that it is a great knife with great customer service. I currently own a large, small, and the Umfaan. I almost always carry at least one.
You won't be sorry if you buy one.
