Second Annual George Herron Award

Branton Knives will be presenting the second annual George Herron award on May 30, 2008 at The Blade Show in Atlanta. This is my way of paying tribute to a great man, mentor and friend for all of the years that he has given me help, hope and inspiration in my knifemaking career as well as life in general. His contributions to the knife world are too many to count. He has helped and encouraged numerous knifemakers throughout his career.
The knife being judged for this award must exhibit the qualities that have been the hallmark of the knives made by "Blade Magazine Cutlery Hall-of-Famer" George Herron for over 40 years.
Examples of what makes a Herron knife stand out from other knives was his clean flowing lines, fit, finish, clean solder joints on his guards, use of quality handle material, and quality sheaths etc.
The judging will take place at The Blade Show in room 109, Friday May 30,2008.
You will need to bring your knife and business card with your table number to room 109 between 2:00 pm - 2:30 pm. The knives will be judged between 2:30 pm - 3:30 pm and need to picked up before 4:00 pm.
I want to thank Steve Shackleford at Blade Magazine for helping me make this award possible. If you have any questions or would like to enter your knife for this prestigious award, feel free to contact me at bobby@brantonknives.com or call me at 843-991-0891

This is the criteria that you will be scored on.

1- Clean and smooth grind lines that make the
knife proportional.
2- An even finish with no color variations.
Either a high gloss or satin.
3- The fit of the guard to blade as well as scales, liner &
tang are even on the knife with no rough edges or gaps
4- The soldering of the guard to the blade is
seemless and appears integral
5- Steel is high quality and handle materials are
unique and/or well presented
6- The knife appeals to the eye & feels good in the hand.
Balance, tapered tang and palm fit will be considered.

Thanks,

Bobby

Bobby,
I'm glad to see that you are doing this again. It was a great success last year. There were 13 knives in the contest last year from great makers. Wayne Hendrix was the winner, but had some really tough competition. Geno Denning, Victor Odom, Larry Page, Eddie Lee and others were among the contestants. (The Picture Below Shows All Of Last Years Knives)
I like the fact that you put out the criteria out early this year. I think that will help the makers prepare as well as know what to do to enter their knives once they get to the show.
I look forward to seeing the Winning Knife!!!

Good luck to all.

Jay

Our own Les Robertson and Jay (Fliprfly) will be judges. Both guys have years of experience with Herron style knives. Each year I drop one judge and ask another to help with the judging. Keeps a fresh set of eyes open for new talent. I want to also point out that you DO NOT have to make a Herron knife. There other nice clean designs out there that fit the criteria that we are looking for. This should be one of the awards
sought after by all makers.
