second custom 110...not a winner

Well, I just received my second custom 110 from the buck custom shop...and it was not a winner...:(

The first one I had them made for me was outstanding, but this one was a dissappointment.

I had ordered another custom 110 with a sambar stag handle, and nickel bolsters and pins (like my first one) and the knife I received was below par. The blade lock-up was not tight and the blade was way off center (and a little loose) when closed.

I did call the custom shop yesterday and left a message, but have not heard back from them yet. In the mean time Im going to go ahead and send it back. I asked them to check it over before shipping (like I did with my first), but some how someone must have forgotten too?

I hate hearing about stuff like this. For me it seems that it's happening more and more with American companies. I'm not sure if the workers just don't care or what. It's happening with knife companies, automobile manufacturers, power tools, etc.

I've had poor experience with Craftsman power tools and also Black & Decker. I have to buy Makita, Dewalt, Ryobi, or Hitatchi if I want it to last. Both my Craftsman and B & D Cordless Drill lasted about a year before not working. :(

I'm sorry to hear about your experience. Hopefully they fix the problem.

I mean you'd think they would know that maybe that would be OK with a normal 110 because "Joe Blow" is going to buy it. However a custom 110 is going to be bought by a collector or an enthusiast.

I bought my son a Buck custom 110 for Christmas and he has it proudly displayed on his dresser. The more I look at the knife the more dissatisfied I am. The Damascus blade has what seems to be a defect in the metal and one of the nickel silver bolsters looks like it has a nick in it. I am thinking of sending it back to Buck to see what they wil do about it.

I wonder if Buck still has some quality control issues.

I ordered two of the Sambar NS FG no pins 110's and when they arrived, it actully took me a couple of minutes of playing with BOTH of them to realize that one was finger grip and the other was not.

I came close to keeping them just to have one each, but finally sent the non fg back and after a while it came back as ordered. (and was never reimbursed for postage as they said I would be, but thats ok too)

In the warranty dept, I sent in a 560 that had a chipped blade. It came back with a new blade and an invoice for $10. I never got an answer on what the $10 was for, but that was ok. I didn't mind paying it.

But then since it was one of my user 560's and it was hunting season, I was using it on my deer processing and the blade loosened up (sideplay) to where it clicked as I would make a cut.

I sent it back with a note, and this time it came back tight, but the way they tightened it, appears to have been to take a tool and literally peened (sp) the rocker pin. Rocker pin now has the indentations in it on both sides. I could have gone out in the garage and done that to it.

I will get around to writing Joe a note and sending it straight to him one of these days. Previously I have been one of his mystery shoppers as he calls those of us that just send in warranty issues without addressing it to him. I have never been one to take advantage for special attention.

I hate for this to sound like a rant, as my issue with the custom was resolved, and I am sure the issue with the 560 will be resolved.

But, I do think there could still be some learning curve issues associated with the move to Idaho.

I know in my past life as a working stiff, it usually took a year or so to fully become comfortable in a new job position and get my staff oriented to my requirements for quality.

Hopefully that is all that is happening at Buck.

Edit: I said Rocker Pin. But meant the Blade pivot pin. All these pins, I get so corn fused....

Nothing new.. I have an 819SS sitting here :jerkit:

Ahem............
Ohhh Chuckie.....

FWIW: I just received my custom 110{this past monday} with nickel silver bolsters and elk horn handles with BG42 blade and could'nt be happier with it. I love this blade better than most other customs of any price range that I've ever bought. the grind is sensational and it cuts like no tomorrow. The fit and finish is super as well, blade locks up tight with a great sounding snap and closed it sits 2mm off dead center.

The Damascus on my knife has a spot that looks like it was not bonded well when they folded the steel. It is a small spot but very noticeable and you can catch your fingernail on it.

Hey Yooperman...
That blows especially since it was a gift. :(
I'd send it back if you can catch the edge of the DM. That's not right.

Goose is right. If it is delaminating, then the "folding" process is defective. (The Damascus should "weld" itself together when it is beaten and folded).

This is a little disheartening, but at least I know it's not just me. I really like the Buck Custom 110's and have several. My last one came with the wrong sheath, a black leather 112 sheath. Of course it was supposed to have a 110 sheath and I specified tan leather. I called for Sara Buck and after several attempts to catch her at the desk left a message. When I didn't hear back after a week or so, I then e-mailed Buck. I've given up since that was September of 05'. Ok, that's a complaint. The good news is that the knife is perfect!

I would think that a phone call right to the custom shoppe should get you the proper sheath. I would definitely try again.

Well, the custom shop did call me back and apologize. They are going to remake my knife.

The first one they made me was great, I was very happy with it, but this one was not so good.

Im sure the mistake on this one was not intentional.

I have to say that if you have a problem its best to let them know that you are unhappy. Im sure they would make it right.

Afterall if you never let them know, you will never find out?

Post when the rework is done please.
Curious about the quality and turn around time to get it done.
Good luck :)

I have the knife on my Desk and have reviewed it with my group. We will be watching these closer going forward.

I didn't even know Buck did custom work. Need to look into it now:D

Sorry you weren't happy with your knife. However, it is very reassuring that Mr. Hubbard posted his response.

Headed out to find the website.
