I have to say, forging this was a blast. I quartered some old Don Hanson III w2 that I bought a while back. I can see why he loves this steel. I have been experimenting with forge heat treating and taking notes as well as trying different finishing techniques for a frosty hamon.

Here's what I got this time.
It's the middle one

Here it is after I finished

Any comments or criticisms welcomed.
Thanks for looking.

That's a great looking blade my friend...

I would like the Hamon to be more central on the blade so there'd be more of it! ;)

Me too Dudley. I'm trying to get better heat control, I gotta practice practice practice.

Where do you keep getting all this cool vintage micarta?!
First the ripe banana and now green. Cool stuff!

haha for real.
There's a fella in Kentucky that has a bunch of this old green micarta.
It's expensive as all get out, but I love the old stuff so I had to buy some.

Those blades are sweet man. Nice handle material too.
I bought I few of Don Hansen w-2 round bar but have not got to forging them out yet. Cutting those bars down makes it way easier to forge to shape. Your post makes me want to try to forge some out soon.

Thanks!

Yeah man, I sat on this steel for a while until I got an anvil. When I finally did, I couldn't wait to try it.

Dave Custer at Fiery Furnace Forge made it and the tongs. He's from Kentucky. I don't know much about hammers, but I swing it and steel moves

Real nice-lookin' hammer. The right hammer makes a huge difference. My favorite is a farrier's rounding hammer made by Jim Poor (he was just on Forged in Fire!), and a dog head hammer from Daado Daado . Your blades look nice too. X]

nice activity ! i am trying hamons lately, lots of variables, a million different methods and tutorials online. i finally got the hamon to follow the shape of the clay, trying for activity now :)

Thanks guys.
John, I'm sure you'll make something amazing. I had no trouble with hamon following clay in a kiln. In a forge, the heat control has been tough for me.

And apologies for the stupid video that's the wrong way lol, I need to get it through my thick head to turn the phone sideways!
