Not a typical question about it...

A local used book/consignment store has a largish piece of heavy leather, maybe 9/10oz and close to 25sq/ft, for sale. Its got some stains and scuffs, but not bad. Was chrome tanned leather sold like this? It wasn't a cut from something, or chair upholstery, it looks like a pice someone bought and never used. Still flexible and not too dried out either.

I haven't asked them if I can do a burn test or not yet, so I just thought I would ask if there is a high probability of it being chrome tanned and not suitable for sheath making.

At that weight (9/10 oz) and if it is cow hide it is most likely veg/bark tan and not chrome tanned....most chrome tanned leather comes in at 5/6 oz tops and upholstery leather is usually 3/4 oz...without seeing it it's hard to tell for sure so hope that helps...

Its pretty heavy stuff. Rolled it won't really go tighter than a 15-18" diameter. I didnt measure its thickness, though. Thanx for the tip though. I will head back and check it out next chance I get.
